Okay, so there wasn't actually a Hogwarts Gobstones Society. There had been a Gobstones Club long ago, but apparently the game had gone largely out of fashion since then, and the club was no longer running. Regardless of which, if there had been a Gobstones Club Tanith doubted she'd be able to join. She was still crap at it, having never had an interest in the game whatsoever before during a shared bout of insomnia in the last term. where Severus Snape had kicked her arse. Since then, having lost terrible and succumbed to an equally embarrassing bet to boot, an interest in cultivating her Gobstones skills had arose as a consequence.

There were some other consequences of course. One of them was possibly could-it-be-called yes-it-probably-could friendship with Severus, of which Gobstones was one base (the others include being socially awkward and often sarcastic). It was nice, actually, although Tanith would not have admitted this if quizzed. She was carefully nonchalant about it, but the fact remained that Severus was one of the few Slytherins she could speak to without wanting to gouge her eyes out with a Quill after five minutes (cough, ritaskeeter, cough). It was a welcome novelty though, having something regular in one's social calendar, like her occasional Gobstones games/lessons with Snape in the common room - when it was suitably deserted- which took place a few nights a week. Tonight was one of those nights. And so right now she was sitting cross-legged on one of the battered leather sofas in the common room, fiddling with her chalk and Gobstones and waiting for her coach/partner to arrive.

It was admittedly slightly embarrassing, because her progress during these games/lessons had plateaued quickly, and now she was probably just advertising her crappiness. Tan supposed she felt she owed Severus a little bit, mostly because of what the bet had entailed. Well, she wasn't exactly sure what it had entailed, which is why she felt she owed him strangely. The potion, whatever it was (for they had never really spoken about it properly since) had left her out of it for several hours, and she had absolutely no recollection of what happened - which was, surprisingly, rather pleasant, although with alcohol the same idea was repugnant to her. But anyway,she assumed she had been suitably embarrassing, probably giggly or weepy or blurting out secrets or whatever people did when they took mind-altering potions. Whatever she had done though, and she knew for a fact that with her luck, it had been mortifying, Severus had never taken the opportunity to avoid her like Dragon Pox afterwards, or tease her mercilessly about it. Well, yet, anyway. So a degree perhaps she owed him.

Then again, she had never told on him for brewing what were clearly illegal and against-regulations potions, so perhaps they were slightly even. To a degree she knew this, and really then, to a degree the Gobstones friendly meetings were just that, friendly get-togethers. All the same though, she was still worried about having done something awful whilst 'high'. Perhaps if she beat him at a game sometime Tanith could coerce him into telling her what happened in a non-teasing way. If he ever arrived that is. Sighing impatiently, Tanith rearranged the gobstones set on the coffee table again and glanced towards the entrance, making a point to be smug about her own punctuality once he does arrive.

There ought to be a Hogwarts Gobstones Society, Severus thought. His mother had been Captain of the Gobstones club when it had existed.But people didn't really play it as much anymore. Not with all the new varieties of Wizaring games that one could purchase. Still, At least he had found one other person to play it with, even if she was nowhere near his own standard. It meant that his competitive side didn't need to be stretched paper thin as he carefully placed each and every shot. After all, last year he had kicked her arse.
Which was probably why he was giving her these lessons. And why she was accepting them. Although...Now that he was less focussed on Lily, or more so, but gave her less of his time, due to the sick feeling he got in his stomach whenever she looked at him with those perfect green eyes...Anyway, now that he was in the common room more often, He'd built up a sort of rapport with the awkward Malfoy. He even found the names some of the others called her slightly hurtful now. PErhaps..on a good day...they could be considered friends. That was a nice thought....He needed all the friends he could get, in case Black tried another attempt on his life...

When he finally got back into the common room, smelling rather strongly of smoke and aconite[which he had found covered almost anysmell, though it still left a hint of precisely what he'd been smoking...] She was on the leather sofa that most of the girls didn't like to sit on because it looked less elegant and people put their feet on it. Tanith was demonstrating just how people did that.

She alreadyhad her Gobstones out, and he wondered if he should suggest that they tried something else because really, she wasn't getting any better. And it infuriated him slightly. But he didn't want her to leave if there was nothing else they could do.

"Evening."His voice was a little rough from the chain smoking and the hurried puffs he'd had to take before the teacher on duty found him, but he was sure she'd understand.

HE put his satchel down on the ground and fished about in briefly before pulling out a small soft leather pouch that contained his personal set of gobstones. He kept his mothers locked away safe in her Gringott's vault, intending for them to serve as some kind of macabre artifact, to prove she had existed in this world, even if his grandfather had disowned her.

"Just a game or would you prefer a bit of a tutorial first? OR we could play by french rules?" Somehow he needed to keep himself amused, or he'd end up trying to distract himself from boredom with thoughts, and remember that Experimental Potion and that Bet. And then he'd snigger.

In still waiting, with dwindling patience, on Severus arriving, Tanith fidgeted on the battered sofa, occasionally glancing at the entrance to the common room and biting on a nail idly. After a while she fished in her bag for her wand and, flicking it at the coffee table, conjured a mug, promptly setting about producing water with 'aguamenti' before transfiguring it with her tried-and-tested-via-insomnia method to coffee. She was much better at this than when she had first met Severus, when her coffee tasted like metally water more than anything similar to coffee. She liked to think now it tasted almost as good as the stuff they served in the Great Hall at breakfast. After a moment's hesitation Tan went ahead and repeated the process to produce coffee for her tutorpartner aswell, in spite of the fact that Severus was now fifteen minutes late, and in spite of the fact that when she had offered him liquids in the past he blatantly expected that she was trying to poison him.

No sooner had Tanith set Severus' goblet down on the coffee table and lifted her own to sip at than the boy in question finally appeared. "Hiya" She nodded back, reasonably cheerfully at her hello. Tan couldn't help but notice the hoarseness of his tone, and was suddenly suspicious (and fairly certain in her suspicions) that he had been late because of a last-minute fag. Surprisingly, whether it was down to her glorious homeblend coffee, or whether it was relief at finally having her night's company arriving, she found herself not to be irritated by this, even though it had made him late, and wasn't as tempted as she'd thought to gloat at it. Instead she was just mildly interested in coercing cigarettes from him, because her own store was running low. "I made you a drink" Tanith added, pushing the goblet further across the coffee table towards him and unable to resist adding carefully lightly; "While I was waiting". Well, she couldn't resist a little bit of gloating at his bad punctuality.

As Severus sat down and ran through their Gobstones-options for the night, Tan thoughtfully rearranged her own stones before shrugging. "We could try the French rules, for a change", she offered, shifting up unceremoniously on the sofa to make room for him. In actual fact, Tanith would much rather have preferred the tutorial and easy, quick game option, because her skills were still pretty non-existent, and it was less taxing. Nonetheless though, she worried that it would be boring for Severus, playing the same thing over and over again, that he would give up on their tutorial-gaming sessions for something more interesting, leaving her evening social life to consist of the Daily Prophet crossword again (nothing against the crossword though, it was pretty good).

Severus eyed the goblet carefully. It looked like laxative potion. But she was supposed to be a slytherin! She should know that to fool someone into drinking it she would have to disguise it. Probab;y why it smelt faintly of coffee. Perhaps it was a double bluff, making him think that it was so badly disguised that it wasn't a disguise at all, but a poorly made cup of coffee. OR maybe a triple bluff..

Then again, they were tenuously friends...you didn'y poison or trick friends into drinkin g laxatives did you? Probably not. Just in case though, he took a very small first sip, trying to taste the sour acidic flavour of laxative potions or the bitter of a poison. It tasted like offee actually. But that would be a perfect disguise. The bitterness concealed by the coffee's own bitter flavour. He hadn't had any caffeeine sincce lunchitme though.

Severus nodded briefly. She'd probably need an explanation before they started playing. It wasn't that he had no faith in her when it came to Gobstones. He just had very little faith in her when it came to gobstones.
"Well we need a 'snake pit' -"*he smirked, considering their location was considered just that by the rest of the school. Tapping the surface of the table caused a hole to form in the middle and he placed a collapsible cauldron under the hole to catch the falling gobstones, opening it with a deft flick of his wrist. The hole was a littel irrregular but his transfiguration spells weren'tthe world's greatest and at least it was vaguely circular. "Right. THat is the snake pit. THe aim is to get your gobstones as close to the JAck as possible, et cetera et cetera. BUT you must not fall into the pit, since that removes the gobstone from play. " HE hedl the jack in the very centre of the 'snake pit' and nodded at her. "Mind levitating this? just use a temporary weightlessness spell." She proably knew exactly which spell to use but Severus was on a nicotine and now caffeine high and quite eager to spend time with his friend-not-a-friend-friend.
