Kat honestly did think Serena was a nice girl. She was a little quiet, but he really did think she could be a lot of fun - he was very much planning to see if he could get the more fun and open side out more often. To be honest, people who believed they were not so extraordinary were often potentially the best of friends.

"I don't think there's any more exchange students. I think there has been in the past but they've either left or graduated." Kat nodded a little. He had wondered if Hogwarts did these sorts of things more often, but apparently not. A shame, really. If witches and wizards only stuck to their own countries and traditions, that was a rather one-sided approach to magic.

He was about to make her another compliment when Serena said she tried to be as friendly as she could be, but decided not to. Not that she didn't deserve it, but he didn't want to overwhelm her. He could try and get her used to compliments gradually.
"Well," Kat explained as she asked for clarification, "because you're so quiet, you don't talk to people a lot, right? So I belong to the few people you talk to, that makes it quite exclusive, right?" He grinned at her slightly. Kat didn't mean it as a joke, though, he really saw it that way. "Plus, you seem like the kind of girl that doesn't open up to just anyone, so you must choose your friends carefully." Of course, Kat knew he couldn't quite be called her friend yet, but he hoped he would, in time - that'd be great.
He waved her excuses about her question. "Don't worry about it. I'm sorry about keeping you up - if you'd rather go to sleep just say so." He smiled, because really - he wouldn't mind. It was getting rather late and he didn't want to keep her up against her will.

Serena tried not to feel as though she were in any sort of spotlight but talking about herself and having someone else talk about her was an entirely strange and new experience for the seldom heard little Irish girl.

It was also strange that Kat had her pegged. He knew exactly what she was like and he'd not been in the school long. They'd never met before now and yet she assumed she must have been an obvious type of person and that there must have been many more like her out in the world. Either that or Kat had a real knack for understanding people. Or both she supposed was possible.

"I suppose you could say that." Serena wasn't sure if she chose her friends carefully or if people just didn't want to be her friend because she was so quiet she got forgotten about or called boring. Serena didn't like to have her feelings hurt (as is most natural she thought) and so she tried to keep to herself and her books. The only way a book was going to hurt her was if she dropped it on her toe or tripped over and the corner stabbed her stomach a little.

"Oh no Kat. You're not keeping me up. It has been a pleasure talking to you though I think I might pack up my things and go to bed soon. I think the girls in my dorm will have stopped gossiping by now." She said glancing over her piece of parchment. She walked towards where she had been and stuffed everything into her bag. She walked back over to Kat. "I hope you enjoy Hogwarts Kat and I'll probably see you in class tomorrow." She smiled and gave him a small wave as she took a step back. "Good night." She said and she turned around and headed to her dorm.

Kat did generally try to get a feel for people. He was a people person, so it wasn't strange that he connected to people easily (he was also wrong sometimes, but hey - let's focus on the positive at the moment). Then again, Serena was a Hufflepuff like him, and he'd been told Hufflepuffs were nice.

"Oh no Kat. You're not keeping me up. It has been a pleasure talking to you though I think I might pack up my things and go to bed soon. I think the girls in my dorm will have stopped gossiping by now." Kat was glad he wasn't keeping her, but yeah, she was right, it was about time to go to bed.
As she got up, he gave her a brief, one-armed hug. "Yeah, see you tomorrow. Good night." Getting up properly himself, he moved to get his own things before going to sleep.
