there's such a sad love , deep in your eyes, a kind of pale jewel open and closed within your eyes. It was one of those mornings. One of those horrible mornings where you wished you could just stay in bed, under the covers, hiding from the world. At least that is how Kane Montague felt. It was Monday, the first day of classes for the week and Kane, despite being a bookish Ravenclaw, could not find the willpower to get out of his warm bed. At least that was until some smart arse decided that it would be amusing to drench the entire bed in cold water. Oh how that useless twin brother of his was going to get it when he worked out how to get back at him. With a groan and a grumble and a few muttered curses (that sounded rather out of place for the usually quiet boy), Kane rose from the bed, showered and dressed before taking a look at his watch. Thus the cursing began again as he realised he was late to breakfast, well at least as far as any of his close friends (who knew his schedule all too well) were concerned. With a sigh he threw his books into his bag and flung the fraying article over his shoulder before shaking his wet hair (in a way reminiscent of a dog) and trudging down the steps and out of the common room. He sat his reading glasses on his nose so that he wouldn't forget them, pushing them up slightly. Perhaps people would actually notice the fact that Brandon didn't wear bloody glasses and have some sense not to mistaken him for his brother.
He hurridly found his way to the Great Hall, avoiding as many people as possible along the way and trying not to roll his eyes as some greeted him with a swift "morning Brandon". Obviously there was no such luck on that front. He scanned the room as he entered, looking up and down the Ravenclaw table for a sign of any of his favourite girls. Some Gryffindor and Slytherin students had taken it upon themselves to start the drama this morning with their usual early morning scuffle and fights and the Professors were breaking it up. Kane slipped unnoticed towards the Ravenclaw table, despite his lanky 6'2" figure and took a seat before he began piling his plate with various fruits and filling his glass with orange juice (anyone who drank pumpkin juice had to have serious taste bud issues). He made some form of strange sandwich with the fruit and two slices of toast and took a bite, tucking his hair behind his ear as he did so, more out of habit now than anything.
Pulling his schedule from his bag as he ate he gave the paper a once over. It took a few moments before he fully registered what he saw written in first place for the morning. He let his sandwich fall to his plate, the concoction falling apart and the grin that had appeared dropping from his face. There, written in bright blue ink, was the word he dreaded most Potions. It wasn't that Kane was bad at Potions (true his theory work left something to be desired because he did not understand the concepts completely) it was more the fact that the Potions Master seemed to have some sadistic pleasure in bringing Kane down, usually with mentions of Brandon. Seriously the man had a horrid habit of referring to him as Brandon, he would swear on the graves of Merlin, Mordred and Morgan Le Fay that the Professor hated him and did it on purpose! Not that such a thing would suprise the Ravenclaw given the Professor's history. He was lost in his thoughts that the soft voice in his ear startled him and he spun around, knocking his plate (complete with strange fruit-sandwich) flying down the table slightly.

Waldemar had gotten up early that morning. The reason? Simple: he liked potions - a lot. He had noticed Kane still tucked in when he'd gone down to breakfast, but hadn't had the courage to wake the boy. Who knew, maybe he was ill or something.. And thus, Waldemar had gone down to breakfast, taking his time - because he could. He spotted his friend and room mate at once when he entered the Great Hall. Waldemar had been keeping his eyes open for him, determined to check on him if he wasn't up after breakfast yet. He smiled as Kane sat down and got up himself to sit down next to him. Waldemar was done eating and had been enjoying a nice cup of tea, waiting for Kane to arrive. Kane still was pretty much his only friend and Wal desperately hoped the other boy wouldn't think he was annoying of anything of the sort.
He was walking over towards Kane as the other Ravenclaw pulled his schedule from the bag and glanced over it. Waldemar smiled a little, though then noticed Kane's cheerful expression had fallen - as well as his sandwich. Waldemar faltered for a moment, wondering if, perhaps, his friend was not glad to see him at all, though then noticed Kane's eyes being glued to his schedule. The first subject on it, to be precise. Sitting down next to him gingerly, Waldemar half smiled. "Good morning?" It was a question, as he was suddenly doubting whether Kane's morning was good or not.

there's such a sad love , deep in your eyes, a kind of pale jewel open and closed within your eyes. "Good morning?"
It came across as a question and Kane was not too sure if it was one or not but the all too familiar voice had made things seem a little less irritating. With a sigh he smiled though it lacked his usual cheeriness "hardly" he said, softly, his eyes gazing over Wally's face before returning to his schedule that he had now thrown onto the table. "First a rude awakening by Brandon then I realise I have Potions first" he rubbed his temples "if this day gets any worse I am locking myself in my dorm and never leaving... EVER!" he said, sighing. He could feel a headache coming on but he said nothing about it. He turned to face his new friend and offered a more genuine smile this time "what about yours?" he asked, actually curious, something that was unusual when he was in such a state "you weren't in the dorm when I was awoken, then again I am running a little late this morning" he said, the last part of his sentence coming off as more of a mutter.
He looked down the table to see where his plate had flown to and noticed that it had landed where a fourth year girl had sat previously. He assumed that the huff of indignation that he had heard had come from her. He said nothing, however, pulling another plate towards him and piling it with toast and fruit and whipped cream, making another strange sandwich. Had he been a female those monitoring his eating habits would think he was pregnant or close enough to it given some of the strange concoctions that the Ravenclaw boy put together. His worst yet had been the strange combination at dinner the night before, everything on his plate and within his reach had been mixed into a sort of potato like mash and he had eaten every bite before making some weird plate for dessert. Some days it amused him at how sicked some people were by his concoctions.

Waldemar leaned with his elbows on the table, cocking his head as he listened to Kane. "Hardly. First a rude awakening by Brandon then I realise I have Potions first - if this day gets any worse I am locking myself in my dorm and never leaving... EVER!" Waldemar half smiled, sympathetic. "Well, I cannot argue your first point, but what is wrong with potions?" Waldemar, personally, liked potions and was rather a dab hand at it. He liked trying to judge his ingredients and guessing if he needed a little more or less than the book said, and, overall, he was very punctual when it came to the time when to add a certain something or for how long to stir in a certain direction. To Waldemar, potions were just another intricate puzzle for him to solve to perfection.
"What about yours? You weren't in the dorm when I was awoken, then again I am running a little late this morning." Waldemar shrugged a little. "I wanted to shower," he said, as though that explained everything. Waldemar was used to having his own shower and this whole sharing-the-bathroom thing was a tad intimidating for him. He didn't like seeing the other boys half undressed or stepping just out of the shower, but them seeing him in such a state was even worse, so when Waldemar wanted a shower, he made sure to get up early. A little absent-mindedly, he watched Kane make his silly sandwich, commenting: "I love the amount of fruit one gets here, Finland has to basically import everything, it's terribly expensive."
[Titsy short, but my Wally muse is returning only ever so slowly >.<]

Kane sighed and looked down at the table as if he were trying to glare holes through the goblet that held his juice "it isn't the subject" he said, calmly, "i would be fine if that idiot professor would lay off and people would stop throwing crap in my cauldron". He lightly drummed his fingers on the table, leaning his head on his free and and turning to look at Wally "the subject itself is as easy as pie" he said, forcing himself not to laugh as a small boy a few seats away took a bite of some form of pie. Ok so that had cheered him up a little but he still didn't want to go to class nor did he want to look at his timetable lest he find another subject that he would rather strangle someone than attend. His only vice was that he knew they were having Charms at some point today and, no matter what, no-one could stop him from being excited about going to Charms clas, it was always the highlight of his day.
"I wanted to shower,"
Kane nodded lightly, not bothering to press on the subject. He assumed that it had something to do with not sharing a dorm all these years. For Kane it had long since been awkward, probably since his crush on one of his dorm mates had gone. That had been the only point it bothered him other than that he had taken it on the shoulder and ignored him. He ran a hand through his hair, which was still slightly damp, and smiled at Wally as he felt the other boy's gaze in his direction. He assumed it was the nature of his strange sandwich that had drawn the other boy's attention but he said nothing on the subject, there was something nice about toast-fruit-cream sandwiches in the morning and he didn't care what anyone else thought on the topic.
"I love the amount of fruit one gets here, Finland has to basically import everything, it's terribly expensive."
"Really?" Kane asked, through a mouthful of food, covering his mouth with his hand as he spoke. Realising he had been a little rude he swallowed and took a mouthful of orange juice "that would be rather irritating to me" he added, looking down at his fruit laden sandwich. With one swift move he pulled the bowl towards his friend "you should try the strawberries, for some reason they are rather good this time of year" that was particularly odd, however, as strawberries were best grown in Spring, often ready by the end of Spring or the early Summer months. He sighed and chanced another look at his timetable only to see that the next subject was Herbology. Well, that wasn't exactly bad, he could deal with that one no problems.

Waldemar silently listened to Kane venturing his frustrations about the potions teacher and his classmates. "Pity.." he softly mused. "One would think that, at seventeen, some people would've stopped being childish.." He gave Kane a comforting smile. "Well, thing is, I haven't got a partner yet for potions, or, well.. any class basically," he added, absent-mindedly playing with a spoon that appeared to belong to no one. "I was wondering if you'd do me the honour." Waldemar felt pretty certain that Kane would agree, but knew there might be exterior reasons for the boy to decline - another partner, perhaps. If Waldemar had to admit it (and he really rather wouldn't), this was perhaps the first time he'd felt nervous around another student before. He'd never had to ask someone to help him before with the prospect of a possible negative answer, this was certainly knew.
He was sort of glad Kane did not ask about him showering. Not that he had expected the other Ravenclaw to do so, he wasn't too nosy (or so he'd deducted from earlier conversations, though there were few), but Waldemar was also not used to explaining to people why he did something. He just did it, he never really did anything he wasn't allowed to do, nor did he do anything he wasn't able to do - why would he have to answer for it? That the conversation moved on to lighter things, small talk, pleased him. During the time he'd been here, Waldemar had sure learned how to do that, and had gotten better at it than he'd have expected. It was easy and pleasant and not annoying at all. People were friendly easily when you small talked. He smiled, amused at seeing Kane talk with his mouth full, and couldn't help but find it cute. "You should try the strawberries, for some reason they are rather good this time of year." He popped one of the red fruits into his mouth and hummed approvingly. "They are - why is that strange? Aren't they supposed to be this time of year?" Waldemar did know about when fruits were supposed to be harvested, he wasn't an idiot, but he was curious (he wouldn't have been sorted into Ravenclaw, had he not been inquisitive by nature).

Kane's attention seemed fixed on the other boy's hand as he toyed with the spoon and he hardly heard the statement directed at him. He shook his head slightly to clear it and smiled, his eyes moving back to the other boy's "help me pass the theory and you've got yourself a deal" he said with a rather cheeky grin. It was one of the things that made a lot of people realise that him and Brandon were two different people; he had this boyish charm about him at times that seemed innocent at times but it was all a ruse, at least at the best of times. It was a cover to divert everyone's attention from other aspects of his life. It wasn't like he was bad at Potions, he just hated the theory and never understood why a roll of parchment on one property constituted for homework. He swiped a stray drop of cream from the corner of his mouth with his tongue and dropped the rest of his sandwich onto the plate, suddenly deciding that he didn't want it. It seemed that the idea of the pending Potions class had finally caught up with him. "I never have partners anyway" he added, after a moment's thought "there's an odd number in the classes and I'm always the extra, well at least until now" he grinned again.
"They are - why is that strange? Aren't they supposed to be this time of year?"
"Not so late in the season" Kane said simply, trying to remember what the month was "most of them die off by this time and need to be replanted". He smiled softly, lost in thought for a moment. His mother had always grown various fruits and plants and as a child he had always helped her. "Strawberries are harvested at the beginning of Spring, those left too late into the season rot and are useless or they are over ripe and don't last long" he said, popping another into his mouth and biting off just before the stalk, throwing it onto his plate that lay abandoned the table. "My mother use to grow them, among other things" he offered in explaination, picking up another. He left the statement there, he rarely spoke of his family unless asked questions, just one of those things.

"Help me pass the theory and you've got yourself a deal." Waldemar laughed softly. "Naturally," he said, returning the grin until it softened into a smile. "Thanks." He was grateful. The only other real friend he'd made so far was Dorcas and although she was in the same year, she was in another house. "I never have partners anyway, there's an odd number in the classes and I'm always the extra, well at least until now." Waldemar chuckled softly, for a moment glancing at the boy's abandoned sandwich, wondering why he had dismissed it so readily absent-mindedly. He could ponder about strange things sometimes. "Well, good, we can pair up in all classes?" Here, he did sound a little hopeful. Ever since they'd first met, Waldemar had taken to liking Kane quite a bit. He had been the first student to talk to him, after all, the first person to be friendly to him besides the teachers.
Waldemar nodded slowly at Kane's strawberry explanation. Although he loved nature, he'd never taken to gardening. Waldemar believed nature needed to grow wild and free, he didn't like seeing it controlled too much. "Strawberries are harvested at the beginning of Spring, those left too late into the season rot and are useless or they are over ripe and don't last long. My mother use to grow them, among other things." Waldemar realised he'd been staring at Kane's lips as he'd been eating strawberries and quickly snapped out of it. "Ah, eh, okay," he replied, a little distracted. "My mother didn't grow anything. I mean, well, yes, we had a garden.." Waldemar smiled at the memory briefly. "Quite a garden.. we were the only house around for miles. But my mother didn't garden." He sighed, half smiling and shrugging. "She rather left those things to the servants, apparently." The tone of his voice made it obvious that he did not agree.

there's such a sad love , deep in your eyes, a kind of pale jewel open and closed within your eyes. "Well, good, we can pair up in all classes?"
Kane let off a slight chuckle and a grin broke onto his features, lighting his eyes up more than normal. "Sure, why not" he said, his grin widening as he took a mouthful of his juice, his eyes focused on Waldemar though he didn't seem to realise it. Kane was, if truth be told, rather suprised that the boy had so easily taken to him. Most people found his brother to be the more outgoing one, the one that was the centre of attention thereby making them the same, among other things. Actually, if he was honest, Kane couldn't understand why his brother was as popular as he was. The elder twin was always pigheaded, close minded and full of himself, it annoyed Kane to no end. Strangely enough, however, he had never brought the topic up with Waldemar. Perhaps it was that he was afraid the other boy would stop talking to him over it or perhaps it was for some other reason, whatever the case he had no desire to destroy the first unconditional friendship he had formed with a male in a long time.
"Ah, eh, okay," "My mother didn't grow anything. I mean, well, yes, we had a garden.." "Quite a garden.. we were the only house around for miles. But my mother didn't garden."
For the first time in a while Kane did not appear as clueless as he was normally. He had not missed the fact that Wally appeared slightly distracted. He said nothing, however, fearing that he could be wrong in his assumptions. He noted the tone in his friend's voice as the boy spoke of his mother leaving things to the servants and he wasnt sure how to take it. Either Wally was annoyed at the idea of servants or he was annoyed at leaving the chore to them. Kane had never been from a rich family and had no desire to have people wait on him hand and foot, he had learnt long ago to stand on his own two feet and that relying on other people left you open for traitors and pain. He didn't judge, however, it wasn't his style and merely nodded, a small smile gracing his features. "My mother tended to her garden as long as she could, she has taken rather ill, unfortuntely, so she has been unable to do as much as she use to".
Kane took another mouthful of his drink before pushing the glass away, there was a strange feeling in the pit of his stomach and, for some reason, he could not place it. He shook the thoughts from his mind as he toyed with a fork that sat beside him on the table, his eyes focused on the cutlery. "What was it like?" he asked, suddenly, looking Wally in the eye and noting the colour that reflected there. He shook his head slightly to dispell the thoughts before continuing "Finland, what was it like there? I've never been out of Britain myself".

Waldemar smiled that Kane accepted his offer, but he didn't seem very enthusiastic. Oh, well, they didn't know each other that well, did they now? He was, indeed, rather fond of the boy and he expected it to be because Kane had been the first of all other students to be nice to him. It was a plausible reason, wasn't it? Waldemar refused to believe it had something to do with.. his little disposition. He hardly knew the boy, after all. Waldemar happily ignored the fact that attraction could also be physical. He didn't want to think of it. He was finally on his way to making a friend in his house (Dorcas being his other friend, and she was in Slytherin), he was not going to spoil this, even if it was only for a few months.
"My mother tended to her garden as long as she could, she has taken rather ill, unfortuntely, so she has been unable to do as much as she use to." Waldemar's features clouded for a moment. "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," he said, and, when he realised how terribly want-to-be-polite and pureblooded it sounded, he added: "I really am. It's ironic how my mother would love an excuse not to garden and yours has one without wanting one," he said, a little lower. In fact, he wasn't sure what to say. It wasn't just that he didn't possess the necessary vocabulary: he'd never had a friend, not even an acquaintance, with a seriously ill mother before. He'd never really felt sorry for someone in this sort of way (this sort of way being: he didn't know Kane's mother personally, but if it hurt Kane, that was what made Waldemar feel sorry). He was so caught in his thoughts as to how continue any sort of conversation without sounding rehearsed and formal, when Kane suddenly asked him another question: "What was it like?" Waldemar probably looked like a deer in the headlights, surprised by the question, but especially by the eye contact. "Finland, what was it like there? I've never been out of Britain myself." Waldemar smiled briefly at the question. "Oh, it's wonderful. I miss it a lot," he said, smiling a little wider and half browsing through memories of his home country. "It's a bit like Scotland, albeit colder and even more rugged, it is more.. sublime - as in the Romantic literary sense, you know?" he asked. "You should go there once. If I can, I'm going to purchase the house we used to live in, once I'm out of school," Waldemar continued, a certain passion shining in his eyes, "it's a wonderful place, I'd love to take you there sometime if you want?" With that, he looked back at Kane again, still smiling, and a sort of warmth had appeared in his eyes that seemed reserved for things he truly loved (be it few).
