No one to talk with, All by myself, No one to walk with, But I'm happy on the shelf Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you
I know for certain, The one I love, I through with flirtin', It's just you I'm thinkin' of. Ain't misbehavin', I'm savin' my love for you James dipped the quill in the ink well once more to sign his name to yet another pointless essay. This one as usual per the History of Magic class was yet again about the goblin riots. Really who cared about riots that happened in 1612? Though, he supposed, that someone would be the ghostly Professor Binns, since every year since his first year he has had this same essay to write. With a sigh he laid down the quill, capped the ink and rolled up the parchment. Laying the parchment on his book bag he stood up and stretched, yawning in the process. Glancing at the clock on the wall told him he had worked later than he realized. It was 12:45 am, the common room was empty except for him and someone's ginger colored cat which was prowling about for a late night snack of mouse. Speaking of a snack, his stomach growled with hunger, as he finished his stretch, time for a late night snack from the kitchens. A well deserved snack, for he worked hard the past three hours to finish that essay which was given a week ago but due first class tomorrow. Really he should try to work on his essays earlier in the week, instead of the night before they are due, but why? He always manages to get them done, one way or the other. He glanced at the stairs to the dorm, thinking of perhaps slipping up there and getting the map and his cloak, but he rejected the idea. The items were buried in his trunk, unless Pads had been using them again then no telling where they would be. Either way he risked a chance on waking everyone, not a happy thought when it came to his mate's early wake up call temperaments. Besides he's done this sort of kitchen raiding since first year, he didn't have a map then, so he really didn't need it now. He knew every nook and cranny of the castle, squeaky stairs to the possible location of Peeves. All easily avoided. Besides a Prefect or two and Filch, it would be smooth sailing. Though mostly the Prefects were not a problem. Mostly they were out snogging, unless Moony was on patrol, then he would have no worries except as to whether Moony would eat all the pastries with chocolate before he could get one. The long walk to the kitchens was uneventful. The occupants of the numerous portraits were fast asleep. The only sounds was the occasional snores. That and the sound of the moving staircases as they were ever changing positions. He avoided using his wand to light the way, just using it only when necessary when there wasn't any faint light from the numerious windows to see by. Reaching the entry hall he turned right at the bottom of the staircase and went through that door. Down a flight of stairs to a corridor which he followed until he came to the painting of a bowl of fruit. Pausing, he listened to make sure there was no one around. Satisfied he was alone he reached up and tickled the pear. It let out a small giggle before becoming a door handle. Stepping through the door, one might think they were in the Great Hall. The four tables were in the exact positon as the ones above them in the Great Hall. There was a high ceiling and at the opposite end a very large brick fireplace. Along the walls were mounds of various sizes of brass pots and pans. And of course there were house elves. House elves were great! The did their work to please the master of the house. In this case they were more than pleased to feed a hungry student. He left the kitchen with a cloth napkin wrapped around several assorted pastries and a goblet of pumpkin juice. Yes they did their job setting him up with a nice midnight or rather after midnight snack though they were disappointed he didn't stay to eat. He couldn't chance it, knowing that Filch would more than likely pay the kitchens a visit for an over night snack too. Thoughts of settling back in an overstuffed chair by the fire, enjoying his snack filled his mind as he made his way back to the staircases. As he climbed he took a drink of the cool fresh pumpkin juice. It tasted good and hit his hungry stomach quieting the rumblings that had persisted. He topped the stairs to the second floor and heard a banging or rather more like a clanging noise. He eased away from the stairs and looked down the corridor to see Peeves moving the suits of armor. Sure that the noise would waken the portraits and soon bring Filch, James moved back to the stairs, taking two at a time, quickly but quietly as possible went up. About that time he heard shouting from below and the sound of running feet from above. He made it to the fourth floor, where he left the stairs behind and ran down the corridor, some of the pumpkin juice splashing out. He figured he'd take the back way up using the less traveled narrow rickety stairs the the house elves no doubt used more than students. They were located down the next corridor past the library. He rounded the corner to the merging corridor, glancing over his shoulder to see if he had been seen. The corridor behind him was empty, however that wasn't the case with the one in front of him as he ran right into the person, knocking them both to the floor. word count 944

Lily was out doing her duty as a prefect, patrolling the halls to try and catch students out after curfew. Sometimes it got to be a bit much for her. She hated doing midnight patrols especially when she's tired and crabby, but at the same time she liked being a prefect. She liked the sense of responsibilty, even if it got on her nerves sometimes. It wasn't the job itself that got on her nerves. It was the other students being out after they should be that got on her nerves. The rest of it really didn't bother her all that much. In fact she even loved having the extra privileges that a prefect does, but then agian who wouldn't? I mean honestly.
As Lily was about to turn the corner, someone slammed right into her, knocking her onto the floor. They themselves were coming from around the same corner that lily was about to turn. At first Lily wasn't sure who had slammed into her, only that they were a Gryffindor. When she got a good look at them though, she groaned. Great it has to be him. She thought to herself. It was bad enough to had to deal with rule breaking teens, but one of those rule breaking teens had to be James Potter. "What are you doing out of Bed at this hour Potter?" Lily asked him, obviously not happy. Lily didn't wait for him to answer though, before she continued on. "Five Points from Gryffindor" she said contuning on, since it was the first time she caught him. I mean it'd be pretty hard catching him with an invisibility cloak, unless of course someone bumped into him on his late night travels, like tonight. Though in this case, he had bumped into her. "Now get back to the common room" she barked. Clearly she wasn't in the mood. It was bad enough she had to be knocked onto the floor, but it had been James bloody Potter who did it.

When he first hit the person he thought it was Alice, for wasn't this her night for patrol? Though he could have been mistaken. He usually pays attention to the posted list of who had hall duty. That way he could avoid her. Her meaning Evans, for he didn't want to get caught by her and end up in yet another argument. Which is precisely what happened. He had been caught!
Sitting there with pumpkin juice strewn about, on him, Evans and the floor he listened to her demanding question as to why he was out of bed. He opened his mouth to answer but she didn't wait or didn't care to hear it before taking five points from their house. Typical of her he thought and couldn't help but wonder if it were Snivellus sitting here would she react the same way? Though he supposed he did deserve it ... he was indeed out of bed. Normally he would argue the deduction of points, but he didn't. For even angry or mad the red head was very beautiful, she had a fire about her that he was drawn to.
Now get back to the common room
Well what could he do? He had been ordered to go back to the tower, which was exactly what he was doing. There was no point in pointing that out. Plus she seemed to be in a mood, he was sure she was braced and ready for a fight, so he did the only thing he could think of. He unwrapped the pastries, which went unharmed from the fall and with a hint of a smile he offered her one "Eclair?" Holding them out towards her, sure she would reject his offer he added. "I was hungry," he shrugged.

Lily scowled at him. Oh yes she was angry and very disappointed for that matter. She really didn't want to deal with him right now either. It was the same thing day in and day out. It was tiring and though she wouldn't admit it she was tired of having to argue with him day in and day out. Yet she still did it anyway. Why? well he seemed to just not get the picture that's why.
Lily blinked, somewhat shocked and gave him a strange look. She busts him for being out after curfew, taking away points from their house and he offers her an eclair? What was wrong with that boy? She blinked again. "Let me get this straight. I bust you for being out after curfew and you offer me an eclair?" she asked him quite confused. She just wanted him to clear things up. A part of her was tempted to take it, but she couldn't. No because then he might think it makes it okay for him to be out after curfew. She had to make an example out of herself.
Okay, maybe she was being silly, but she took her job as a prefect very seriously. She didn't want him to think, that if she took the food he was offering that she was accepting of him being out after dark. It seemed more like a bribe to her. It didn't matter if that was the truth or not, that's what it looked like. "That could be taken as a bribe you know" she said. Yes it was silly, but it was the truth. Some people would think of it as a bribe.

Let me get this straight. I bust you for being out after curfew and you offer me an eclair?
The look of bewilderment that spread across her face told him that he had caught her off guard with the offer of an eclair. He guessed she was expecting an argument, their usual. Instead he did the complete opposite, the unpredictable. Unpredictable yet honest. But then again, did she really know him well enough to predict what he would and would not do? No, at least not in his opinion. Sure, they have had a few run ins and she has heard and probably seen some of his antics, but she didn't really know him. And that was the whole issue between them in a nutshell. She has never given herself the chance to get to know him. He supposed that was his fault. It's hard to get past first impressions, and as a first year he gave her a really bad one when he and Snape got into it on the train. Even though Snape started it with his comments to James, James gave it right back and more. So yeah, attacking Evans' friend was not going to leave a good impression. One would think after 5 years that she would realize he had grown up and was not the same person. But then again he and Snape haven't and never will get along. And if she was expecting that to happen before she would accept him as a friend, then she would be waiting until the end of time.
He indeed was hungry his stomach rumbled to let him know. He shrugged at her comment before speaking. "I'd offer you pumpkin juice too, but it seems that you already have it." He half smiled, before shifting the eclairs to his other hand, picking up a napkin he reached across and dabbed up some juice that was on her cheek. Handing her the napkin, in case there were other spots that needed attending, he then picked up an eclair and bit into it.
That could be taken as a bribe you know
He coughed, choking slightly as he hurriedly swallowed before laughing. "A bribe?" He laughed again. "Evans it's only a bribe if I had gone unpunished, but since I was punished by having points deducted from Gryffindor, then... it's not a bribe." He shook his head, closed his eyes briefly, before looking back at her. His tone plain, his face showing no emotion he said flatly. "Look I thought you may have been hungry too. You don't have to accept the offer, but don't make it into more than it was." He didn't want this encounter to end up like all the others, her mad and him frustrated at himself. Sighing, he gently wrapped the other eclairs and stood up, pulling his wand, giving it a flick causing all the pumpkin juice to disappear. Slipping his wand back into his pocket he looked at her. "I'll be heading on back to the tower now, unless you want to escort me to make sure I don't stray."
