Let me tell you, a little something about myself
One might say that Melisande’s childhood had been very near picturesque, having been born and raised in the deep Irish countryside under the watchful eyes of two very loving, if not fussy and exacting, parents. Truthfully, it proved to be somewhat lonely, considering she was an only child. Living in such an isolated place did little to garner her any true friendships outside of the various wildlife after all. She was homeschooled until the age of twelve when she received her letter summoning her to Hogwarts, the prestigious academy of Witchcraft of Wizardry. Needless to say her mother had been brimming with excitement. There had been such talk of the school's flawless reputation and to be able to boast that her daughter had been specially invited, well, it was something of an event within the Adair household. Of course her father seemed to regard it a bit more seriously, emphasizing that she was going solely to take full advantage of the valuable opportunity with which she’d been presented and not simply for fun.
Despite her generally composed demeanor, twelve year-old Melisande could hardly contain her enthusiasm when she boarded the train at the station. There were so many unfamiliar sights and sounds that she couldn't help but marvel at the sheer volume of people on the platform, or the modernized style of their clothing compared to her neat, hand-knit attire. But that did little to deter her and instead she took pleasure in embracing the experience, undaunted by what she didn't understand. This attitude was exactly what made her such a prized student while she studied at Hogwarts. As soon as the sorting hat had grazed her head, the word 'Ravenclaw' had been shouted and an uproarious applause followed her as she bounded towards her designated table and future housemates.
One year melted into the next and before Melisande realized it, she was entering into her fifth year. Up until that point she had been described by her professors as an enthusiastic, dedicated, intense and passionate learner. They had nothing but praise for the young girl. Unfortunately, not everyone felt the same way. A handful of the girls in her dorm had become resentful of the attention she'd gleaned and sought to put an end to it. She was bullied and set apart from the females her age, often taunted about her unusual features and unfashionable clothing. It was fortunate she was a strong young woman, and so it was relatively easy for her to ignore their nasty comments and petty gossip. But her troubles had only begun, and when she returned home, she was greeted with some very surprising news.
They were moving to London. Just like that.
Melisande had taken it as something of a shock, but she didn't necessarily consider it a terrible thing. After all, they wouldn't have to travel so extensively to get her to school every year, and they would finally become more in touch with the rest of wizarding society. What none of them took into account was how cruel and fast-paced society could really be. Assuming that they were prepared, they took the leap headfirst and moved into a roomy three bedroom flat. Not long afterwards, her father had secured himself a position within the Ministry and her mother had begun volunteering at a local jewelry shop. About half a year passed without any incident, and then all hell broke loose.
It started with the pressure her father was under thanks to his new job and the hopes for a promotion. He spent very little time with his family, and eventually her mother became tired of it. The only thing he was concerned with at that time was his work. They often had heated discussions when they thought she'd fallen asleep, and eventually these 'discussions' escalated to full out rows. He began seeking attention without having to worry about commitment and began entangled in various affairs. Melisande's and her mother were both devastated, and the Adair daughter could never understand why her mother never left him. Perhaps she knew she'd never have been able to survive on her own? Or maybe she simply didn't want to tear the family apart for her child's sake? Whatever the reason, they remained a broken family.
What Melisande would never have anticipated was that her father would become so desperate to attain greatness .. to achieve influence, that he would contract himself to the Death Eaters. Seeking fortune in all of the wrong places, he also became involved in dark magic and the dealing of illegal artifacts. When she started her sixth year, he'd become violent and ruthless, battering his wife and demeaning his daughter. At one point he attempted to force Melisande into the dark lord's service as an atonement for his failings. But she wouldn't have it. That was the first time he'd ever dared laid a hand against her. And it would also be the last. All of her pent-up frustration and deep sadness and fury swelled up within her and she lashed out; grabbing her wand and uttering the words, 'Crucio'. It did very mild damage, mostly because her heart wasn't black enough to conjure the full curse, and she had her mother ran. They realized then that if they'd remained in that apartment any longer they would have ended up hurting more than they did leaving him.
After the incident, and managing to change their identities for the sake of anonymity, Melisande withdrew into herself at school. Her sparkling personality was gone, replaced by an aloofness that puzzled and concerned her professors. However she worked twice as relentlessly and managed to earn herself honors for her hard work. Upon graduating, she remained at home with her mother for a short while and then thought it the best thing to move on with her life, finding herself her own flat nearby to keep an eye on the older woman and attempting to look for decent work anywhere that would take it. Roughly two years later she was sent a letter requesting her presence again at Hogwarts. With sense of uneasiness she met with the current Headmaster and was thrilled when they asked whether she'd be interested in becoming an assistant to the Care of Magical Creatures they'd hired. They recalled her impressive work ethic and sterling grades, and searched avidly for her .. confused as to her sudden and unexplained disappearance. She said little in the way of an explanation but took on the job without hesitation and a promise that she would do what she could.
Haunted by the possibility that her father is still looking for her and her mother, and afraid that his gambles will eventually invade their newly peaceful lives, Melisande is constantly looking over her shoulder out of fear. But she remains strong enough to keep putting on foot in front of the other, moving forward cautiously but steadily towards bigger and brighter things.
