What can be found in a name:
Vanessa Laurentius, but she prefers to be called Nessa - less snobbish
When the day I was born:
15/4/1958
The Angels screamed:
Colin Laurentius & Olivia Laurentius (née Robertson)
And Hell shut its doors:
One younger sister (7): Myrea
While creatures retreated:
None
To depths unknown:
Her great-great-grandfather was a muggle, but ever since they've been 'pure'.
I hide from them:
- Madam Malkin's
- Honeydukes
- Her dorm
- Gladrags Wizardwear
Be who they want to see:
Nessa is a girl that could stand out if she wanted to, but hardly has any desire. Let's be honest, her red hair (which she probably inherited from her mother's Scottish genes) could never compete with Lily Evans' locks anyway and besides, her eyes aren't green but a pale blue, making her more plain-looking than the Griffindor. Nessa hardly cares, she's usually quite happy with the way she looks and doesn't have to hog the limelight and have tons of guys wooing over her.
A few years ago, at fifteen, she had still looked as though she was twelve, but a year later her curves started to fill out and now, at seventeen, she finally has the feeling she's completely grown up. The main reason why Nessa likes curves is because they look good in clothing. She's a tad curvy, but not overweight, and it's probably due to her sweettooth.
One thing about her that stands out are her hands. They're long and her fingers are nimble and slender - ideal for sewing, because that's what Nessa does best. When not in the school's uniform, all the clothes she wears are made by her. They're usual in seasonal colours: greens and pastels for spring, brighter colours for summer, reddish browns and aubergines for autumn and black, whites and reds (with a splash of greens) for the winter.
In short, Nessa looks the way she is: gentle, nice and caring, energetic, and always doing whatever she does with the uttermost patience and attention.
But that leaves no one:
To discover that inside:
What can I say? As a Hufflepuff, it is obvious Nessa is a pleasant person to be around. She is. Though she is a tad quiet (especially when enfolded in work), she knows (as a prefect) when to open her mouth. How to be strict without being cruel and how to give way without being too submissive. Also, occasionally her quiet side subsides completely when around friends and people she feels comfortable around, but she is no typical, airheaded teenager.
Nessa has a number of goals in life. Firstly, her passion: sewing. She hopes one day to work at Madam Malkin's and even weave her own fabrics, so she can embed magic into the fibers as she weaves them. At the moment, she works a part time job at Gladrags Wizardwear in Hogsmead, which isn't bad, but socks just aren't her expertise.
Another thing she strives to achieve after graduating from Hogwarts is starting a family. At home she only had one little sister, but Nessa values family immensely. There's only one problem there, though, and that's the fact that she's never been approached by a boy in the romantic sense before and she's absolutly not planning to be some sort of desperate damsel the rest of the year just in order to find someone. It is too bad, but apparently Fate seems to have a different thing in store for her? We'll see...
All-in-all, Nessa is a calm person, but also fun to be around. She has a steady, small clique of friends she hangs out with and does well in school. She smiles a lot and you'll rarely see her angry, I'd advise you to keep it that way.
This soulless being:
+ Lollipops
+ Sewing
+ Summer
+ Charms and Transfiguration
+ Her little sister
+ Her friends
+ Her parents and other family
+ Christmas
Is just as lost:
- When colours don't turn out the way she wants them to
- Blizzards (unless she's safely inside)
- Heatwaves
- People who don't listen to each other
- Brussel Sprouts
- Accidentally sleeping in
- Not seeing Myrea very often
As everyone else:
+ Charms & Transfiguration
+ Creative things (not just sewing, though sewing is the only thing she's really talented at)
+ Patient
+ Honest
+ Perfectionist
+ Humour
In a world that knows only hate:
- Always gives people second chances, even when they don't deserve them
- Prone to losing track of time when engulfed in something she likes
- Needs more sleep than the average teenager
- Perfectionist
- Will always place family and friends above herself
- Sweettooth
And causes pain for the soulless like me:
* Wishes a certain someone would notice her. (certain someone not determined yet - if you're interested - PM!)
* Sometimes envies boys because their lives seem so much simpler.
They left me to die:
The Robertson's have been Scottish wizards and witches for ages, though have never been concerned with pureblooded snobbishness.
On a bed of roses:
The Laurentius have only been involved in the world of magic since the last four generations. Last name originally came from the Netherlands, 'Lauwens', and once the first of their family was send to Hogwarts, they changed it to 'Laurentius' because they felt it was more fit as they were off to 'a new start'.
Blood seeping through:
Nessa's mother has trouble conceiving, hence the huge age difference between Nessa and Myrea. She hasn't told her daughter yet that she might have the same genetical weakness.
The satin sheets of fame:
Well off. They're not poor at all, but to call them snobby rich would be a bit too much.
What a bitter story of love:
When Nessa was born, her parents couldn't have been more happier. They had been trying to conceive for a while now and had almost given up hope when Olivia turned out to be pregnant. Nine months later Vanessa was born and she became one content baby as her parents spoilt her rotten without turning her into a brat. She had a great childhood and when she was four years old, her parents decided to try and make her a sister or brother. Unfortunately, Fate wasn't on their side this time and every time Olivia menstruated again, it was a slap in the face. No child, again - and they were both growing older.
Nessa never understood what was wrong, but she noticed that mummy was crying a lot and she could never grasp why, so she just made her a lot of pretty drawings with bright colours, hoping that would make her a bit happier. During the times her mother had a hard time coping with the fact she wasn't pregnant again, Colin used to take his daughter out on trips to all sorts of places, so she wouldn't notice, but of course she did. In the end, Colin and Olivia simply gave up, focusing all their hopes and dreams and attentions to Nessa, who, by then, was starting to show the first signs of magic abilities.
The following years were great for Vanessa. Her mother seemed to have accepted the fact Nessa would remain an only child and was generally happier and the family enjoyed every moment of this blessing - even if it was just one. They could've easily had none at all, right? Nessa was a cheerful girl and easy to please, so that only made it all the better as she survived primary school without too many magical mishaps and everything.
Though then another little miracle happened: when Nessa was ten years old, Olivia found herself pregnant once more and it seemed there was nothing that could stop their happiness. There were one or two complications with the pregnancy, one of them being that Olivia had to give birth in a muggle hospital and Myrea coming into the world by a cesarian section, but apart from that, everything turned out just fine.
Nessa was overjoyed. Not only did she have a lovely baby sister, but she also saw how happy her mother was. Trying to be a good big sister, she tried to help Olivia whenever possible and make things for the baby. Drawings or clay scuptures, those sorts of things. This is the moment when her interest for clothing started to pop up. One day Nessa got up and said to her mother 'I'm going to make Myrea the most beautiful princess dress in the world' - and that's how it all started.
Thinking it would be good for Nessa to learn something like that, Olivia got her old sewing machine out of the dusty attic and learned her eldest daughter how to use it. Soon, Nessa would hardly be doing anything else. School was going fine anyway and there was no doubt she would be accepted in Hogwarts, as her mother had stimulated her in that aspect too, practising simple spells with Nessa ever since she'd shown some talent.
So, it was no surprise she got a letter in the year of her eleventh birthday. Nessa, and everyone else for that matter, was overjoyed and for months she looked forward to travelling to her mother's 'Caledonia' and going to school there.
As the weeks progressed, however, it also became very clear to her that she would be going alone. Without any family, while her family had always been with her. For a few days, Nessa said she'd even refuse to go if Colin couldn't go with her, but after a talk and a good fit of crying, all was well again. She would write often and would come home during the holidays. Honestly, her parents hardly doubted that their daughter would find her place amongst the other students.
And they were right, too. From the moment their daughter boarded the train and spoke to a girl who would, soon, become her best friend, all memories about being alone were forgotten. It turned out that Nessa was good at making friends and keeping them, being a nice and patient person naturally, and teachers admired her devotion when it considered her studies. All in all, she danced through the years quite lithely without any major drama (partly due to the fact she was never involved with any boys in any way, I suppose). Of course, there was teasing here and there and she was only human, so not everything went flawless every first time, but she did well.
In her fifth year she started working part-time at Gladrags Wizardwear in Hogsmead as she was sure she wanted to work in a similar sector after she'd graduated from Hogwarts. She's working less in her seventh year as the examinations are more important than ever, but she still enjoys her work and can't stop sewing anyway - exams or not.
"Augh-!" Nessa shivered violently, Emma chuckled at her friend - drenched to the bone. "No laughing," Nessa whined - only half serious - as she pulled off her drenched cloak. "You know, when I came here, I-" "I know," Emma interupted, rolling her eyes. "You thought Scotland would be some sort of paradise, full of gentle nature and colours because your mother had always described it as such. I know. You told me and you tell me every time when you're surprised by what you call 'torrential rain', while we normal people just call it a shower."
Nessa, now in dry, woolen tights, a kneelength dark brown skirt and an aubergine turtleneck, stuck out her tongue at her friend. "You tease me, you can perfectly well see that this was not just a shower." She nodded at the wet clothes, now a sad, wet pile on the floor, and dried them with a simple spell. Emma chortled and rolled over on the bed, now lying on her stomach. "Really now, Nessa, you'd say you'd be used to this weather by now. And besides, nothing better than a bit of rain to clear your mind." Nessa had sat down on the bed, folding the clothes that had previously been wet with practised precision. "My mind needs no clearing," she said with a slight grin at her friend and dorm mate, "I know exactly what I want."
