Let me tell you, a little something about myself[/color]
Born to a relatively well-to-do though obscure pureblood merchant family, Horace knew from a young age that connections were everything. And that being approachable was everything else. His father's father had started the family business with a dram of Re'em blood and within three weeks through a series of trades, had all the ingredients required to create an anti-syphilis potion. He sold the batch and used the money from hte marked up price to create another batch, and another. After a decade or so, his profits allowed him to purchase a shop and he broadened the business, branching into other aspects of relatively simple potions that people were too upperclass, too stupid or too lazy to brew themselves. After two decades, at the age of 56, he began to stock ingredients too and placed his son in charge of the shop front. In 1881, the two wizards moved shop to Diagon Alley. After a year at this new location, the twenty eight year old Fergus Alisdair Slughorn met the charming Arsenius Jigger, already famous for exotic ingredients.
At the age of thirty he attended a rather exclusive ball where Arsenius was acting as escort to Sigyn Oledatter, a visiting pureblood young lady from Denmark who could, oddly, barely speak a word of it due to having attended a finishing school in switzerland. A steamy affair developed and eventually the two were married. almost nine months later, their son Ernest was born. He died of cot-death. It was another four years before Horace was born.
He proved to be robust, stubborn and very fond of a small set of British cavalry figurines. To the point of eating one of the dragoons to prevent it being taken away at bedtime. He was rushed to the Healer who could unfortunately not assist due to the length of time between the figure's ingestion and the visit. The Slughorns feared the worst, so when Horace survived [as expected by the Healer] they spoiled him, thinking that by providing him with the finest things available the young boy would never again seek to eat one of his toys.
At the age of six he showed signs of magic, managing to shrink a purple velvet dressing gown to his size perfectly. He was given daily lessons by his father, who was not a skilled wizard, and occassionally shown little charms by his mother who was exeptionally skilled at charms but little else.
He attended hogwarts and was sorted into slytherin. Using his knowledge gleaned from working on the shop floor, or rather, sitting near the till as his father's employees worked. He made friends easily and excelled in Potions, Transfiguration, Charms, Defence and the Mental Arts. His apparition took three years to pass the test, but he merely views this as 'extra practice'.
On leaving Hogwarts he travelled, as was custom, and made many more contacts in the Wizarding world. It was one of these who suggested he teach. And it was another who helped Armando Dippet choose a younger Potions MAster that usual after Veranus Veridius retired.
Slughorn revelled in teaching the bright young minds of the future, and when a few stayed in contact with him, he discovered his own vial of Re'em blood. A few cancelled detentions and overlooked homework deadlines, and when the Students left they rememvered him. It did not take long for him to gather together a small group of talented or in some cases well-connected students. The Slug Club was born. During it's early years it was predominantly a boy's club and he and the students would smoke and drink port well into the night. Soon however, he realised the vast potential that some of the young witches were showing. The club admited girls and the smoking stopped, but lavish dinners were arranged and Horace would later think back, wondering if he had been the guiding influence for so many of the power couples of later years.
A notable attendee of the Slug club was one Tom Marvolo Riddle. He is also one of the alumni that Horace has been least eager to maintain contact with.
He has been teaching for fifty-eight years now and still loves it. He is always finding ways to make his lessons exciting engaging and most of all, informatively fun. He thinks that this batch of students are the brightest yet and has high hopes for many of them, including Lily Evans, who has a fond spot for due to excellence in potions and a small fish called Francis who he keeps in his living quarters and feeds only slightly less regularly than he feeds himself.
