The sunlight had begun struggling to filter through the branches of the trees around half an hour ago, now darkness was slowly but steadily creeping it’s way from the depths of the forest and towards the castle. Hogwarts fought back with hundreds of lit torches and candles within numerous window frames, the flickering lights illuminating the magical castle, outlining it against the marred night sky, a dull puppet show. Heavy rain clouds loomed on the horizon, the distant clap of thunder making the oncoming weather all too easy to predict, a storm was coming, already the wind had picked up, howling as it pierced through the outskirts of the forbidden forest. The trees were coming to life, leaves blowing past, tiny bowtruckle moving to the safety of the inner forest. Colle stayed put though, his entire demeanor seemingly less than bothered by the obvious forecasted weather.
A tendril of smoke blew from between parted lips, swept away by the wind immediately, ash and the occasional small ember flying from the burning end of a cigarette. Some habits are difficult to get rid of, this particular one he picked up from his mother, she was usually none the wiser when it came to her own cigarettes going missing. In the beginning it had, admittedly, made him feel grown up, he believed he would never get addicted, that he could quit whenever he so wished. Well, he can quit, but it’s been proven he’d have quite a few angry, if not aggressive, outbursts before finally calming. He’s addicted to the little nicotine sticks now.
Not that that was why he was currently sat on the edge of the forest, he doesn’t care enough about his smoking habit to escape quite this far away from the castle. There was a flower he was interested in, a flower that could only be harvested in the light of the full moon which was beginning to rise into the sky. Not for romantic purposes, of course not, he wanted it purely for it’s magical properties, in fact he needed it for a few potions he was trying to concoct as a side project for potions. This area was scattered with them, all he had to do now was wait for the right time to strike, it could be minutes, it could very well be hours from now. All he knows is that he’s definitely not walking back to the dungeons with empty hands.

Kaine had wandered on down to the edge of the Forest, knowing his best friend Colle was once again on a mission for this flower for potions. He'd accompanied him a couple of times before; normally those nights ended up with the pair of them lounging against a tree trunk, smoking and talking the night away. Good times, though not awfully productive.
Sure enough, he soon spotted Colle leaning against a tree, cigarette in one hand and smoke drifting away in a small column above his head and into the darkness of the surrounding trees. He headed over, feeling in his pocket for his own packet of smokes. He only ever smoked when he was around Colle; a bad habit, but a fun one nonetheless.
"Evening," he said as way of greeting as he came over to Colle. Finally finding the packet in the depths of his pocket, he pulled a cigarette out and lit it, he smoke trailing up to join Colle's cloud overhead. "Looking for the flower again? Hope you don't mind me joining you; that common room is getting on my nerves tonight. All the first years are blathering on about the damn Valentines Ball - what they're going to wear and who they're going with and blah de bloody blah. Does my fricking head in."
He leant back against a tree next to Colle's, enjoying his cigarette. The night was quiet...peaceful. A nice relaxing change from the madness of the Slytherin Common Room when full of over-excited First Years.

The only initial greeting that Colle gave was a little nod, otherwise it may have appeared that he didn’t even see Kaine arriving. His gaze never left the woodland area, eyes darting from the bottom of tree trunks just in case the flowers began to bloom in a moment of distraction. The magical properties of the lunar flower were marginally more potent just moments after the petals unfurl, if he were to miss that moment he’d end up with low quality produce which’ll leave him in nothing less than a grumpy mood until he’s discovered another potion to keep his ever working mind active.
A smile tugged at the corner of his lips when Kaine sparked up his own cigarette, his own habits badly influencing that of his closest confidant. He’d never encouraged the other boy to take up the habit, but he had to admit that it was pleasant to have somebody to smoke with, somebody to chat with whilst his motor function’s limited to lifting his cigarette to his mouth occasionally. Relaxing isn’t something that comes too easily, especially at this time of the year, the Valentine’s ball is at the front of most people’s minds.
“Nyeh..” Eloquent as always, when he finally did speak it was hardly something that could even be considered a sentence, more like a noise. Other words quickly followed though, sometimes silence is just too difficult to maintain, “The Valentine’s Ball’s pointless.. If anything it’s an easy way to get laid, everybody’s looking for love.” A wider smile pulled at his lips, changing his expression into something a little cheekier than his usual blank stare. Kaine was somebody Colle automatically let his guard down around, he’s pretty much the only person that he feels comfortable with. Everybody else could turn around and stab him in the back, but not Kaine.
“I for one plan on going alone, I won’t be returning alone though, not if I can help it.” Another line of smoke blew past his lips, the dying ember on the cherry of his cig spiraling into the darkness as he flicked it away, “keep an eye out for the first blooms? If you can do that then your presence is more than welcome.”

"As always mate," Kaine replied, his eyes following the same line as Colle's in keeping an eye out for the flowers. This had become something of a routine; Colle would wander off down to the Forest edge by himself, Kaine would follow, they'd stand and smoke, occasionally have snippets of conversation, and both be looking out for the flowers blooming. It was quite nice really, in a strange sort of way. Others would think them mad or a little bit silly, but Kaine didn't care what they thought, and he was pretty damn sure Colle wasn't bothered either.
They stood in comfortable silence, the only sign marking their presence the constant trail of smoke pluming away from them. The night was still quiet, and they were quite alone down there. Kaine smiled as he took in Colle's comments about the Valentine's Ball. He knew Colle would find someone there to take back to his room; he always did. The first years were just so easy to manipulate and coerce into doing naughty things. Surely even a first year should know better than to trust a Slytherin?
"Don't sink too low though," he said, stubbing out his finished cigarette beneath his foot. "Surely you're not that desperate to get laid? Please, for everyone's sake, just pick one of the better ones."
The great thing about their friendship, was that Kaine could come out with comments like these, and not receive the usual scathing retort from Colle that 99% of other people would. They'd known each other for far too long and knew each other far too well. Colle knew that Kaine was only ever thinking of his best interests, and visa versa. Though Colle was definitely the nastier of the pair...put them together and the words 'double trouble' didn't even come close. They would snap and have fights, but then they were as close as, or even closer, than brothers. Always had each other's backs and each knew just how to calm the other down.
It was a good friendship, one Kaine knew would last for a very very long time. His eyes had drifted over to where Colle was leaning, but now they focussed back onto looking out for the flowers. Colle would kill him if he missed one.

Colle wouldn’t have even noticed or even thought that coming down to the Forest edge was strange behaviour. There’s not one little piece of this Slytherin boy that believes anything he does is anything less than normal, he is who he is, he’s comfortable with who he is and whatever he does? Well, that’s nobody’s bloody business. If they stick their nose into what he wants to keep to himself then they’ll most likely lose that nose. Potions can do anything if you know your way around the ingredients.
“I’m not at all desperate to get laid,” he retorted with a casual tone of voice, not having taken much offence to what Kaine had spoken, “and I never sink below my level, you should know that all too well.” Their friendship had got them into arguments and fights before, Colle has a very strict outlook at what a pureblood should be, just like Kaine’s father. It’s an attitude that Kaine himself doesn’t share.
Colle’s destined to become a Deatheater, Kaine’s future has a dozen more possibilities.
“Don’t you go embarrassing yourself, or me, either, will you?” it had to be said, Colle’s well aware of Kaine’s outlook, he may not care who he dates, but Mr Jamison here does. Colle’s supposed to be a bad influence on Kaine, but some things just can’t be altered. “This ball isn’t worth sullying yourself for.. M’assuming you’ve got a date? Or at least something attractive to hang off your arm?”
The Ball wouldn’t be a topic of discussion that he personally would choose, but he was running with it for the moment, it would change when silence takes hold once more, it always does with these two. He wouldn’t mind a snack sometime soon, something he’s sure Kaine will pick up on when Colle’s black hole of a stomach starts rumbling in protest of it’s emptiness.

"Yeah I've got a date," Kaine replied, pulling out another cigarette and lighting it up. He took a few drags before talking. He'd been somewhat dreading this conversation, knowing that Colle would be oh-so disapproving of his date. Not that Kaine really gave a damn; Colle was his best friend and obviously his opinion did matter to Kaine, but not always when it came to certain things. Colle would get over the fact Kaine was dating a Gryffindor....eventually.
"I know you wouldn't sink below your level," he carried on, a small smirk on his face. He just worried sometimes that Colle's libido would run ahead of his intellect. It hadn't so far...yet. "Plus," he continued, he smirk becoming a grin. "You know you could get basically any girl you want. You could talk a nun into bed you could."
There was still no sign of this flower. Kaine was keeping an eye out, but it seemed they might be out of luck tonight. He knew it was hard getting this flower, but this was getting ridiculous.
He then stood in silence finishing his fag. The night was extremely quiet and still, and he was quite happy to just stand there and enjoy the silence. The Ball wasn't exactly a favourite topic of conversation, not between these boys anyway. They may have been best friends, but some things just didn't make good conversations.

Colle was quiet for a moment, watching him take a few drags and just expecting more information than he actually got. His pale brow furrowed in mild annoyance at that, the lightest of frowns marring his features, “and?” It was just one simple word but an audible level of a demand hung within his tone. In his mind best friends are supposed to give a little more information than when giving a statement like that Kaine had provided, “do I know her? Please don’t tell me you’ve gone ahead and bought yourself a date from Knockturn, I was kidding when I suggested that.” There’s two little things that Colle thinks makes a best friend exactly that; firstly there’s the whole sharing information thing mentioned previously, the second is that best friends help get each other laid. So really Colle hadn’t been kidding when he’d mentioned buying a date. If you pay enough you’re pretty much guaranteed a good night. It was an easy option.
Though in all honesty he knew that if the other Slytherin wanted a date then he’d get one. Kaine had a habit of underestimating his own charm and Colle wasn’t good enough with reassuring words to convince him otherwise.
There came a nice little feeling of satisfaction when Kaine carried on, causing the smile on his own lips to stay constant and not yet fade away. It broadened all the more and even slipped into a quiet laughter after he finished speaking, “you think, do you?” Colle never really thought of himself with that big a success rate, or with any reputation pointing towards making Kaine’s words true. But true friends know people better than even they themselves do sometimes and Colle had to admit that he had a point. It would have to be one hell of a corrupt nun, but he had a point.
That’s probably only because Colle uses more manipulation than any charm, he plays the perfect gentleman to get what he wants and then, when the charade becomes boring and he’s got everything that he’s wanted, he leaves.
This Slytherin seventh year knew that the wait for the first blooms could take a while, he’d spent a winters night waiting for the petals to unfurl for hours. When they finally bloomed his hands were so numb with cold that he had trouble picking the blasted things. Colle was just thankful that the evening was warm enough that circulation continued.

"You might know her," Kaine said quietly, stubbing his fag out on the ground and blowing small smoke rings up around his head. He'd only just mastered that trick and he was really quite pleased with himself. "Whether you do or not doesn't matter though....you won't like her and I know you won't." He pursed his lips and smirked at Colle's comment. "Mate...I don't think I'd go to Knockturn for that kinda thing if you paid me. God knows what you could catch from there. Any suspicious itches I would immediately blame on you."
He straightened up a little, looking around again. Still no sign of this goddamn flower. The things he did for his best mate, honestly...
Kaine smiled again, pulling on one cuff of his sleeve. He was silent for a moment, his thoughts going round and round in circles. Colle's reaction to Addie was going to be an awkward one...not least for Kaine himself. A Gryffindor as a date was probably Colle's worst choice, and he would sure let Kaine know about it. And what he would say to the poor girl herself...Kaine had to smirk a little at that notion. Addie could stand up for herself, but against Colle, everyone was as defenceless as a baby. Colle was one of those people who could shoot you down with a simple look. His one-liner insults were famous throughout Hogwarts. Not for the first time in his life, Kaine thanked everything and everyone that he was Colle's best mate. It lessened the sting a little. And gave him good practice in insulting people.
"You know...I really wouldn't be surprised if I got back one day to find you in bed with said nun," he continued, pulling out another fag and offering the packet to Colle. "It would probably be the highlight of my life. Not seeing you in bed and misbehaving, but seeing that it was with a nun. I'd love to be right for once, with yoy." He winked and laughed lightly. The image currently in his head was too hilarious for words.
