Silvanus opened his eyes and realized that his head was in his arms. His eyes felt heavy and difficult to open. He slowly raised his head and realized that he had fallen asleep in his office yet again. His procrastination had been getting the better of him lately, and instead of getting reports in to the Headmaster on time or marking and returning assignments when he should, he had been taking random walks in the forest in the dead of night for absolutely no reason. In his mind, it was better than grading anyways. Sometimes he couldn't help but wonder why he had even gone into the teaching profession. He knew it was because he couldn't think of anything else to do with his interests.
Some days, he hoped that one of the magical creatures would attack him and then he'd be so badly injured that he could take a leave forever, but not be so mangled that it ruined his beautiful face. Maybe an interesting scar to intrigue the ladies. Yes, that didn't sound so bad.
Silvanus allowed himself to get lost in his daydream for a while longer before looking down at the piece of parchment he had fallen asleep on top of. Yes, he was marking essays that he had made due three weeks ago and had yet to return to the students. Currently, he was marking Sirius Black's. The work was there, the knowledge was there, but at the same time, there was an air of laziness about it that Silvanus couldn't quite put his finger on. Alas, there was nothing overtly wrong with it, so he gave it a perfect grade and moved on to the next one. James Potter's. He knew it would be as good as Black's, so he instead decided to move on to someone's who would be more different. Peter Pettigrew. He obviously tried quite hard on the assignment, although the intellect wasn't really there. He had all the basics, so he gave it just an average grade. It was amusing for Silvanus to mark papers, as he never really read anything thoroughly. He just skimmed the papers looking for the information that was necessary to get a good grade. Next up: Lena Becket.
Lena was definitely a bright girl, but there was something else about her that always allowed Silvanus to give her grades that she received. Even on that one assignment a while back while she had gotten one piece of information mixed up with something else and he had still had given her the best mark in class. She was attractive, as much as Silvanus didn't want to admit to himself. He had tried to keep away from students ever since the last time he had been reprimanded for his inappropriate actions.
Barely reading what she had written, he had given her full marks and set her essay aside with the others than had been marked. Just as he let go of her parchment, however, a knock came at his office door. It was only an hour from curfew, making Silvanus believe that it was another professor either coming to mock him, or needed something from him. Perhaps it was Pomfrey requiring some kind of poison for an antidote or something of the like.
"Please, do come in," Silvanus called with an air of sarcasm in his voice. He did not really get along with any other members of staff, so it was never usually much of a pleasure to interact with them. The last time he enjoyed Hogwarts fully was when the younger female staff members didn't know of his promiscuous ways.

400 X 200 [/img] if the clouds are just too high I F I T O S S A N D T U R N A N D F A L L B Y T H E W A Y S I D E , J U S T F O L L O W T H E S T A R S• || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • LENA sighed to herself as she continued down the staircase that had decided it wanted to move while she was on it. Looked like she would have to take the long way to get to the office she needed to get to. She had to go and talk to Professor Kettleburn. Her patience had finally worn off over the three week wait of their essay grade being done. She could be patient when she needed to but this was stretching it a bit far for getting grades back. So the plan was to just go and visit him, ask him if he had finished the essays, if yes then she would leave with her grade and it would all be done. Her friends thought she was being silly for going and seeing him but she just couldn’t wait anymore like they could. Care of Magical Creatures wasn’t that bad of a class, she did love to learn new things after all. But the professor just seemed like an odd one to her, as he didn’t seem to much to even care about teaching. Which made her ever curious mind ask why he was even still there teaching.
It was so late that she was actually getting close to being caught out after curfew but she didn’t think that this meeting would last more than 5-10 minutes, let alone more than an hour. As it was hours past dinner and she had been in the Gryffindor commons with friends just hanging out and doing some homework, she was dressed in some regular muggle clothing. The silver wrap around top wasn’t something she would usually wear but it had been a Christmas gift, so she wore it. It wrapped around her showing off all her curves, making her incredibly shy in the outfit but there was nothing she could do about it. As a gift from a friend, she had to wear it. Stuck with her plan to go see the professor, she continued going up and down the corridors, starting to hum softly out of boredom of the silence. She tried to be careful about there being no one around. Before the curfew or not, if Filtch found her he’d be liable to give her a detention for “flirting with being out past curfew” or something as stupid as that.
Finally she reached Professor Kettleburn’s office and she knocked, waiting for his answer on if she could come in or not. She hoped he was at least there because if he wasn’t she’d get all annoyed and pout her way back up to the tower and that just wasn’t a good experience. Lena heard his answer, sarcastic or not, and opened the door carefully, her head poking in first to look around before the rest of her body followed a second later. She’d never been in his office, or many professors’ offices before, so she took a moment to just look before turning back to the tall man behind the desk and gave him a slight smile. “Hello Professor Kettleburn. Sorry if I’m intruding on you. I was just wondering if, by chance, you had our essays from a few weeks ago graded yet. I’m just curious about the grade I received.”

In came Lena Becket. It was strange considering he was just thinking of her. She wasn't even in her usual robes considering they weren't in class hours, but it still caught him off-guard. Whether it was intentional on her behalf or not, he couldn't help but notice that she seemed a touch dressed-up.
"You're looking.... well, this evening, Miss Becket," he said before he could stop himself. He didn't even bother trying to look embarrassed that he had complimented his sixteen- or seventeen-year-old student. There was no one around, anyways, and it wasn't like he called her fit or gorgeous or anything extremely inappropriate. What he had said was just flirting with inappropriate. He hadn't quite made it there yet. He looked her up and down one more time, not particularly caring if she noticed. Like his thoughts had led him before, there was no one around. Besides, he could hardly get in trouble for a child claiming that his eyes had wandered across her body. He could have been looking at something near her feet for all she knew. Besides, if Lena didn't want to be looked at that way, she wouldn't have chose to dress that way.
"No, no, you're not intruding by any means," he insisted with a grin. He looked at a clock that was propped on his desk. "Aren't you out a little late?"
At her question, he picked up the stack of essays he had marked and pretended to shuffle through them, looking for hers, despite the fact that hers had initially been on top of the pile. When he finally 'found' it, he waved his wand over it quickly, erasing the mark he had placed there. She hadn't seen that he had given her a perfect mark. He read through it, reading every single word. Yes, the material was still there, but he managed to find a few imperfections, and those few imperfections were enough to stall Lena.
"Take a seat," he instructed, indicating the seat across from him. He knew that if he took his time, he could easily hold her back for an hour and into curfew. Only forty minutes to go. "You've made a few mistakes, and in fact..." Silvanus paused in order to go back through his essays. He grabbed Sirius Black's, and put it next to hers on the table. "It reads remarkably similar to Mr Black's here. Care to explain?"
Silvanus grinned knowingly. He knew that if one of them were to cheat, it would probably be Sirius. Lena seemed more like the tutoring type, although it wasn't like Sirius would need any extra help. He did show considerable skill in the course without anyone's help. However, Silvanus would never put it past Sirius to not pay attention for one class and need help catching up, or even skipping a class. Nor would he put it past the young boy to go to Lena for help just for a chance to get close with her. Silvanus wasn't stupid, he was aware that the two young teenagers had a thing for each other, or possibly even dating one another. Despite what most students thought, professors caught on to these sorts of things.

400 X 200 [/img] if the clouds are just too high I F I T O S S A N D T U R N A N D F A L L B Y T H E W A Y S I D E , J U S T F O L L O W T H E S T A R S• || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • HIS comment about her looks made her blink in confusion before instinctively looking down to see what she was wearing. Logically, she knew exactly what she was wearing but no matter who you were if someone commented on your clothes it was by pure instinct to look down and see what they were talking about as if they didn’t remember what they put on that day. Not quite understanding why he was commenting on her looks she shrugged slightly to herself while facing him again. “Thank you professor.” His looking up and down her form went completely unnoticed by her, not really paying attention to it as there was no need to. Because he didn’t look weird after his comment on her looking well she didn’t think anything of it after the fact and just dismissed it as something just odd about him.
Lena couldn’t help but give him a slightly sheepish smile as he pointed out that she was stopping by late. With a shrug and a glance away from him, thinking that she really should have waited till tomorrow after all, she turned back to him to give a reply. “It is a little late sir and I apologize for that. But I had been busy and then finally couldn’t… well I couldn’t wait to know my grade anymore.” Her cheeks burned pink, realizing how stupid she sounds. But she couldn’t help it, it was the truth. She had been unable to go longer without knowing her grade. “I don’t have very much patience sometimes,” she felt she had to add to try and explain why she couldn’t go without knowing her grade anymore.
It took him a minute to find her papers, making her shift her weight back and forth on her feet, impatient with waiting on him to find it. When he did he took a minute to reread it and she mentally sighed, hoping this all wasn’t a bad omen for things to come. Finally he stopped reading and motioned for her to sit, along with the order to do so.
Being told to sit down by a professor was never a good thing and she bit her lip in worry as her eyes dropped to the paper in his hands, wondering what might be wrong. Had she somehow said something completely off the mark to give her a Troll? Oh she would probably faint if that happened. Lena had never gotten a grade below E before in the 6 years she’d been at Hogwarts or lower than a B in regular grade school. She quietly sat down in the chair he indicated, waiting for him to speak again. When he did she felt her chest tighten slightly with more worry before letting out a slow breath to try and calm herself down. At the mention of her paper being like Sirius’ and the implication that she had copied, her back straightened immediately and she had to force herself not to glare in indignation. Cheating?! Never.
The tone of her voice was slightly cooler than it had been before his comment as she spoke. “I’m sure it is just a coincidence professor. Sirius and I study together sometimes, along with our other friends. Whenever I can get them to study, that is.” She hoped he really didn’t plan on pulling up charges of cheating from her. She couldn’t prove anything unless Sirius was pulled into the middle of it and gave his opinion but by then part of her reputation was sure to be tarnished and she would prefer that to never happen. Chocolate eyes continued to watch him, serious, waiting for his next words and hoping that they wouldn’t condemn her.

Silvanus watched as Lena checked over herself. Had he made her self-conscious? He supposed that he frequently made girls blush, but it was never (usually) his intention to make them self-conscious. Besides, had he not complimented her? It wasn't like he said that her outfit was ugly or anything of the like. He didn't know why she was looking like that. She was a good-looking girl, surely she was aware of that by now? Maybe all girls never really knew how attractive they were. Maybe they all spent so much time trying to look like someone that they're not than paying attention to their good attributes... like her long, shiny hair, or her bright, brown eyes... or even her attention-grabbing curves...
Silvanus shook his head. Did she just thank him? He hadn't expected that. Usually girls merely shook off anything that may not seem teacher-appropriate, thinking that he didn't mean it in that way, especially when it came to Silvanus. Throughout the years, many young, female students had crushes on him and didn't think that they had a shot with him, and therefore didn't believe that he could possibly be coming on to them.
"You're welcome," he replied, actually meaning, No, thank YOU for being so good looking. Words that would never be uttered, of course.
"Well, Miss Becket, I too have been busy. You didn't just assume that when I was finished marking that I would return the essays in class? I hardly think being pestered is going to hurry my marking process," Silvanus returned, coldly. Usually, he would have been legitimately annoyed by a student coming to ask him to mark faster. He hated marking assignments, and if it were up to him he wouldn't even give them out. However, according to the curriculum, he had to. Besides, if he didn't give out assignments, he would never actually remember his students' names and then everyone would end up with an 'Acceptable' to make everything 'fair.' He honestly didn't mind Lena coming in so late, anyways. He just wanted to make her feel like she was being a nuisance.
Silvanus raised an eyebrow at her explanation.
"Are you sure all you two do together is study?" he questioned, as if it was something that was a professor's business. He coughed slightly and looked back at the papers as if he had said nothing at all. His eyes read through both essays, and then he pointed at certain parts of both. "Look there and there and there... exact same wording. I doubt you and Black spend so much time together that your brains morph into one, allowing you both to come up with the same words. So tell me, Becket, are you copying from him or is he copying off you? I could get Black called down here as well to try to make this easier? I just assumed that you would be the more.... honest one. We all know how trustworthy Black can be, right?"
Silvanus got a kick out of making Sirius sound bad to Lena. He knew they were close, and he knew with his authority he could get away with making such comments about Black without Lena getting overly emotional about it. If she did so, Silvanus could easily take away House Points from her. Ah, the pros of having power within the school.
Silvanus leaned back against his chair and surveyed Lena expectantly.
"So you see, I can't exactly give you a marked paper as of yet until I know the truth. Both these papers are easily worth an 'Outstanding,' but whichever is the cheater will have to receive a failing grade."

Not spending much time around professors in general, let alone male ones, meant she didn’t fully understand or even care about the fact that he probably should have never commented on what she looked like in the first place. The boys sometimes would comment on her clothing and things, nothing too derogatory unless Sirius or James was teasing her about something, so it wasn’t completely unheard of for someone to comment like that. Just unusual. Her obliviousness again helped her to not even notice that he seemed to be tracing her body with his eyes as if he was undressing her. If she knew he was looking at her like that she never would have came to his office alone and at night.
The very obvious put down had her biting her lip a little harder and flinching a little bit, shifting slightly around in the seat knowing full well that she deserved that comment. His cold tone didn’t bother her as it was but as he was her professor, she had to respect him and basically insulting the man by saying he should do nothing but grade papers and be around at the convenience for students was just not the best thing she had ever said even if she never meant it that way. Her gaze dropped as she tried to reply and stick up for herself a little bit. “I’m really very sorry Professor. I didn’t mean that you weren’t going to turn them in. I was just hoping you could let me know mine before class or something along those lines...” Yeah, definitely not her most well thought out plans. The boys were going to turn themselves into loons when they hear about how foolish she had been.
At his comment on her and Sirius only studying together, as if he was surprised they didn’t do anything else her back straightened even more, the blush starting to return even though her gaze had turn icy. Before she thought about stopping herself she replied to his question. “Yes I am sure all we do together is study, sir.” She stressed the infliction slightly, showing her disapproval without actually pointing it out. “We’re friends.” While they used to be something a little more, all they were now was friends and Lena was happy with that. At least they were talking and able to hang out again now. Her tone at saying the word ‘friends’ clearly pointed out she didn’t wish to continue that and hoped he wouldn’t either before getting onto the more pressing subject at hand.
When he started pointing out particular points on the paper where they were supposedly too close to being the same for comfort she leaned forward, tipping the chair slightly to balance, so she could try and see what he was pointing at to know for sure. Her gaze flew up to his as he outright said clearly he believed one of them had cheated when she knew neither of them had. Her fury started to bloom in her chest at his accusations plus the insult to her friend on calling him untrustworthy but she carefully swallowed it down, knowing she couldn’t act rashly or she’d end up in detention or even expelled. Dark eyes focused on his as she tried to study him and see if he really thought they were cheating, along with trying to impress on him how unhappy she was at the moment.
So she bit back her anger and continued to sit leaning forward, unable to relax now and fall back into the chair. The balancing act was a precarious one but it had to be done for the moment. At the mention of either her getting the failing grade or Sirius her eyes widened in fear before slitting in fury at being forced to choose between her and her friend getting a good grade. Maybe he could see reason, if she tried it. It took a few minutes before her lips were able to part and actually work the way she needed to instead of letting out the stream of curses that she wanted to. “Professor, surely you can see it is just a mistake. There are a limited number of ways for something to be said and it is probably just pure coincidence that Sirius and I wrote the same thing. Neither of us are cheats. As for calling him down here I don’t think that is necessary as he would only say the same thing. We didn’t cheat.” Was there any hope of this not getting out and her not losing her reputation or even hurting Sirius’ and making him hate her again? Frankly she would do just about anything to make sure this problem got solved with no one else’s knowledge of what happened and that neither her or her friend got a failing grade.

Silvanus was actually rather surprised by Lena's obliviousness to his comments. Usually by now, girls would be blushing, or otherwise teasingly telling him that he was being inappropriate. Either Lena legitimately was not interested in him, or she just wasn't catching on. To be fair, before Sirius came about, Silvanus didn't really remember Lena getting that much attention from boys. He remembered thinking it was odd, although at the time she had been too young even for his tastes. He had just been able to tell that she was going to become a very pretty girl.
Silvanus sighed a bit impatiently at her. "You always do well in my class, Miss Becket; what makes you believe that this particular essay was going to have a poor mark? Unless you had come in here for some other reason?"
Silvanus raised an eyebrow suggestively, but due to the fact that he was a regular eyebrow-raiser to begin with, he didn't know if she would take notice. Then again, he didn't do it to get her attention. He clearly already had that. It was just something that he instinctively did.
Silvanus grinned to himself when she stated that she and Sirius were just friends. Excellent. He had, just like most other Professors, wondered if there was something more. Even if there weren't sinister thoughts in his head, it had been the talk of the Professors for a while... did Sirius Black actually tie himself to one girl? It didn't seem like himself if he had. Luckily, it seemed like he was just pulling her through hoops like every other girl. He was not going to complain.
He could see Lena becoming uncomfortable, which was exactly what he was hoping for. He liked making people feel uncomfortable, as long as they didn't do the same back to him. It was one reason why he had a hard time getting along with other Professors... they knew how to get under his skin, and many of them held seniority over him. With students it was the other way around. They couldn't possibly tell him off without him being able to give them detention if he got flustered enough. There weren't many students who had the ability to make him flustered. Silvanus always had the upper hand. Right now, he was enjoying the seemingly murderous look in her eye.
"Coincidence? Hardly. Do you know what I think happened?" Silvanus retorted, leaning forward at his desk to get closer to her in a conspiracy-revealing kind of way. He couldn't help but notice she smelled nice. "I think you left your paper out or lent Sirius a book, and he thought it would be a good opportunity to copy off your essay. Or perhaps he asked to borrow your essay for ideas, but creating his own wording became too difficult for the simple boy. After all, I couldn't imagine you being the one who cheated. You're always so... attentive in class."
Silvanus looked at the clock. Not much longer to go before she would be out of her common room past curfew.

if the clouds are just too high I F I T O S S A N D T U R N A N D F A L L B Y T H E W A Y S I D E , J U S T F O L L O W T H E S T A R S• || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • THE tone of his voice as well as his sigh made her wish she could sink back into the cushions and disappear, biting her lip as she looked down. Could she really explain to him about her thing with grades? It was a little childish and she was willing to bet he would probably make fun of her but, really, what choice did she really have considering? His hint of suggestion blew right over her, not taking it for what it was, and looked back up at him with her own eyebrow raised, confused. “Why else would I ever come to your office?” Lena was too naïve sometimes. She knew all about sex and everything but when it comes to being pointed at her or her trying to get little hints, they just didn’t get noticed by her. Probably came from being innocent about the opposite sex for a good deal of her life.
“I mean, if I needed help with class work I would just wait until the next time in class to ask you the question. So I don’t really see any other reason.” She shrugged slightly before letting out a small puff of air, knowing she would have to try and explain her obsession with making sure she got good grades. He was going to make fun of her or think her a fool, she just knew it, and fidgeted in her seat slightly before speaking. “I always have to make sure I have good grades. Taking things for granted isn’t something I like to do so even though I do ‘always do well in your class’ it doesn’t mean that the next class will be exactly the same. I’d rather be prepared for failing something and it never happen than think everything is perfect and it all goes crashing down.”
That sounded semi intelligent, right? Might sound a bit conceited or stupid but there was nothing she could do about it now as all of the words were already out of her mouth and she sighed, looking back down to the ground. She never should have came to his office that night. It was such a huge mistake and she was regretting it so badly right then.
Listening to him picking on her friends and insulting Sirius like that was really making it hard for her to hold in her temper. She couldn’t attack him or even yell at him, it was against the rules. But it seemed like he was almost goading her into it. So as he watched her, she couldn’t do anything but glare at him, wishing he would self combust. Lena refused to give him the satisfaction of making her lose her temper about all of this and force herself to take a detention. The idea to just get up and leave did cross her mind but she was not one to give up and this needed to be solved now before rumors of Sirius cheating got out and he got in trouble. If her friend got detention or worse because of herself or because she didn’t fight hard enough to stop this, she would never forgive herself.
Now, she tended to pride herself on being a lady. A tomboyish one, but a lady none the less. So when she snorted as he started outlining how Sirius would have cheated, it was both terribly indelicate and a surprise that it had came out. She didn’t pay any attention to him leaning in closer beyond it being a challenge and she did the same, dark chocolate eyes burning with her fiery anger. “Sirius Black did not cheat. He did not steal my paper and look it over. He didn’t do anything. Its pure coincidence and I don’t understand why you’re so hard determined to say that he cheated when the three parts you pointed at are generic enough to obviously have been accidents. If he ‘got lazy and copied’ as you said, there would be a lot more overlap. Wouldn’t you agree?” At least, she hoped he agreed so this could be over and done with and she could go back to her dorm.
Her ears caught on his affliction of the word ‘attentive’ and she frowned, sitting up straighter and facing off against him. “And what do you mean by me being attentive? It’s my job as a student to pay attention to what the professor is teaching. Is there something wrong with learning now?” Yeah she wasn’t a happy camper, her voice firmly in an icy tone while facing off against him. Handsome man or not, and he was very handsome to tell the truth, he was infuriating and she actually wanted to hit him. Physical violence from her was a rarity so that just showed how mad she was.

Silvanus watched Lena bite her lip, and he had to admit it made him have to catch his breath for a moment. He was glad that he was making her so nervous... he liked to think it was what he did best. Besides, the subtle pink glow in her cheeks made him grin to himself, making him look like he was taking pride in him making her uncomfortable (which he was), but it was mainly because of her physical reaction to him. It was absolutely amusing for him. He couldn't help but wonder if she was attracted to him. The thought made him silent momentarily. She was being rather argumentative, and if she was so angry with him, why did she just not leave? He felt like she must feel some sort of attraction. Sure, she wasn't throwing herself at him, telling him that she'd 'do anything' to make both Sirius and her get a good grade (like he had happen to him before with a different student), but at the same time she did come to him late at night, started an argument and refused to leave. Most girls when frustrated would usually just up and go. Some would even go to the Headmaster claiming personality conflict. He wasn't getting any of this from Lena... she merely argued it out herself. Did arguing potentially turn her on? She was a rather argumentative person to begin with. He was glad she had no idea what was going on in her head. Silvanus couldn't help wonder how many professors may have had these sorts of conversations with themselves in their head.
Silvanus merely shrugged innocently. "You may have came to discuss a conflict with another student in class, or asked for help in tutoring - although you clearly don't need it.... there's an array of reasons why you could have come other than to get your mark on an essay."
Lies, all lies. It had obviously not been what Silvanus had been suggesting, but since she wasn't going along with it verbally, he had to assume that she was playing the, 'I don't know what you're talking about Professor - oops, I dropped my pencil, let me get that,' routine. He could play along, if that's what she wanted. Besides, what student didn't dream of some sort of affair with a good-looking older man in an authoritative position?
Silvanus chuckled lightly at what she was saying about wanting to be prepared if she failed.
"Miss Becket... Lena... you have obviously never failed a class before, or have even come close to failing. If you were anywhere close, the professor of said class would pull you aside and tell this to you, and explain your options," Silvanus explained, as if it were common knowledge. He wouldn't know, considering he never failed anyone before. He at least let them slip by. Well, providing that they weren't causing trouble for him. There had been a girl here in there in the past that had tried to claim harassment, or some boys who thought he was going after their girlfriends... but even then, those students usually dropped the class.
Lena snorted, and then began to lean across the table as well. He didn't know what she was leaning in for, as well, but she wasn't anywhere close enough (due to his gaudy desk) for her to make a move, so he figured that wasn't what she was intending on doing.
"Whether a student cheated or not, Miss Becket, is not for a student to decide. That is the Professor's place, and if I believe that there was some foul play going on, I have the right to do so. You have been a student for a mere six years here. I have been a professor for much longer. So, who do you think would be better at spotting plagiarism? I have seen a lot of good ones... the person changing the wording to make it sound more like something they would write and so on, but I've always caught them," Silvanus explained in a demeaning tone. He stood up and walked over to her side of the desk and leaned comfortably against it, looking down at her. "It's my job to notice, and I'm sure if I brought the issue to the Headmaster, he would tell me to do what I thought was right. It's not his place to mark measly essays."
As much as he bet that Lena was hoping he was wrong, he knew he wasn't. He had a student go to the Headmaster as he had given her a 'zero' for such an issue, and the Headmaster merely told the student that if Silvanus felt there was enough cause, then he had full right. Unless the Headmaster had become more lenient, or had some sort of favouritism towards Sirius Black (favouritism towards Lena was likely, however, that's why he didn't pin it on her), he assumed that the outcome would be the same.
"For such a bright student, I'd assume you'd know what 'attentive' means," Silvanus replied, frowning down at her. "It means for one to pay attention, not be distracted. Did you learn anything in school or from your parents before you got here? It's a rather simple word."
Silvanus took the opportunity to smile at her in what he thought was a charming way. If she wanted to argue, he would argue with her all night. His eyes then wandered to the nearby clock, and his smile only got wider.
"Now unfortunately, you have wasted so much of my time that it is now past curfew, which I'm sorry to say will have to lead to detention," Silvanus told her. "You see how dangerous it was for you to come here so close to this time?"

if the clouds are just too high I F I T O S S A N D T U R N A N D F A L L B Y T H E W A Y S I D E , J U S T F O L L O W T H E S T A R S• || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • RIGHT. As if she would come for any of those reasons either. If she had an issue with another student she would handle it on her own without bringing someone else in on it. Lena didn’t like to let people fight her battles for her. She could handle herself just fine. And tutoring is also not something she needed help with in any class. Not from a professor anyway. Her look very clearly said ‘you’re reaching for excuses on this one’ as her lips parted so she could answer. “While other people might come to see you for those types of reasons, I am not one of them. When it comes to classes, grades are the only thing important to me and would be the only thing I would see you about. This is the first time I’ve ever seen you outside of class after all.” She used that as proof that she wasn’t an idiot and didn’t need help with every little thing. She just couldn’t stand the wait any longer.
The young girl had no idea the type of thoughts going on in her professor’s head at the moment. If she had she probably would have been long gone and hiding from him. Maybe even dropping his class. But as it was, she was completely oblivious and a little too trusting when it came to the people around her. If she knew of his thoughts she’d also be liable to feel incredibly insulted. There was no need for her to get attention from an older man or any man at all for the foreseeable future. Ever since the run in with Mulciber and him attacking her, she had just tried to keep a low profile and was just fine on her own. She gave him a weird look when he said her first name, not knowing why he was suddenly being so informal with her and her mind immediately started trying to work out why he was doing that now as she listened to him talk. His words basically spelled out that she was being stupid for thinking the way she did and was unable to stop herself from glaring at him again. “Just because it has never happened before doesn’t make it impossible to happen. I would rather be safe in the knowledge that everything with my grades is fine than not knowing my grades and having to worry about if I will pass or not. Worrying is a waste of time and I came here to get rid of that worry. That is all.” And look where that got her. Even more worried about all of this possible cheating business.
It was really horrible to admit it, but he was right. If brought up to Dumbledore, the teacher would always be the one decided in the right and there was nothing to be done about it. Sirius was going to get in trouble and it was all her fault. There was nothing she could do to not have Kettleburn report all his accusations after all. At least, there was no way that she knew of. Her nails dug into her palms as she felt so completely useless at this. What could she do? Sirius didn’t deserve to get a failing grade. She knew he didn’t. But what other choice was there? Her gaze turned distant and her teeth bit deeply into her lip as she continued to think and worry about what might happen, ignoring him standing over her for the moment.
When he answered her question on influence he might have meant, she snapped out of her thoughts and focused on him once again. Probably would have been better if she had not. With this newest insult to her intelligence she finally gave up her pretense on staying silent to not get in trouble and stood up, shoving the chair back so hard it looked like it wanted to flip. She was also sick of him hanging over her and, while there wasn’t mind difference now that she was standing because she was so short, it still put them on a more even level. “I know what the word means professor. I was asking about your infliction to the word as you well know.” The way she said his title obviously showed through how little she thought of him as that now. Never before had she wanted to actually hit a professor. But that feeling was growing with great alacrity the more he spoke. “I am not stupid, professor. You’ve seen my grades. Please don’t call me that again.” Her ‘please’ was there for the illusion of politeness, though her voice was cold enough to show it was anything but.
Lena felt like growling at him, maybe hitting him with a few curses, but she held that urge in. Detention was one thing, even though she had never had detention before. If she attacked the professor she’d be liable for expulsion instead. That would not be allowed. “I would not be here in the first place if you had graded these essays weeks ago when we turned them in. It’s your job after all. I also wouldn’t be here still if you hadn’t suddenly decided to attack me and my friend, accusing us of plagiarism. So this waste of your time is all your fault and I don’t give a damn if you give me detention. I am not a child. Do not patronize me, professor.” She glared at him and turned around and walked to the door, aiming to leave the room, too pissed off to hold much of her attack urge back. She’d rather risk Filtch than staying there any longer.

Post by Silvanus Kettleburn on Jul 6, 2011 18:00:44 GMT 1
Silvanus could practically feel the tension rising, and he grinned to himself about it. She was apparently one to be easily bothered, and that was something that he was very much enjoying about her. If he could wind her up just enough... well, anything could happen, couldn't it?
"Well, theoretically, Miss Becket, if you were having issues in my class, I would think that you would come for extra help," Silvanus retorted calmly. It was funny, it was like the more she got wound up, the calmer he got. He couldn't help but wonder what kind of sick person he truly was on the inside. Who got calmer the more hectic someone else became? Honestly, Silvanus wasn't worried about it. He knew what kind of person he was, and he was unashamed for it. He liked younger girls, there was no denying. Although they were older teens and technically legal, he was still considered a pedophile or borderline-pedophile from many of his staff members. In fact, most meetings he had with students were somehow always conducted with a professor just outside the door. He didn't know how they knew that he was having a girl there, but he wondered if the girls either told the professors because they were uncomfortable, or because Dumbledore in his infinite wisdom just knew. In either case, he was surprised he hadn't been sacked yet. He assumed that beyond his personality traits, the only thing that kept him there was his knowledge on the subject. As much as others wanted to poke and prod and make fun of, deep down he was good at what he did. He just didn't mark things on time, and showed favourites. Honestly, Silvanus felt as if he would feel worse about himself if he didn't just act like himself. Not only would he be a pervert then, he would also be a liar. "So you're trying to tell me you'd come to check up on a grade on one essay, but you wouldn't come for extra help if you needed it?"
Silvanus didn't know how truly flustered Lena may have felt, but didn't care. All he cared about was that she didn't cry. He had seen enough crying female students in his time there. Some were students that he had turned down (either because they were too young, not good looking enough or because he had an extra watch on him) or because he told students he had flings with that they needed to end (usually because at least one of the Professors caught on) or even simply because they were going to fail the class. Honestly, he did even have a few students who merely confided in him because they thought they could easily relate to him. Silvanus only opened this service for Slytherins, however. He didn't understand the mindset of people in other Houses.
Silvanus particularly enjoyed watching Lena's eyes. She had a fire in them, a fire that was passionate. He could tell just by looking at her that she belonged in Gryffindor. Passion was something that mostly Gryffindors had. Yes, Slytherins were hard workers and would do anything to 'achieve their ends', but it wasn't really the same. In Silvanus' mind, the difference was that Slytherins were intelligent and did whatever it took where Gryffindors sort of just... jumped into things. They had more explosive tempers where Slytherins were more cunning. Yes, Gryffindors may have their bravery, but Silvanus would prefer to be a Slytherin over a hot-headed Gryffindor any day.
Silvanus tilted his head curiously at Lena's unexpected outburst. His brown eyes narrowed almost in a dangerous fashion.
"You do not get to decide when a Professor decides to mark an essay. Are you really selfish enough to believe that your class is my only class? Are you not aware I have students in younger grades who require a bit more attention? Are you also not aware that older students are supposed to be more independent? In any case, essays take time to read, Miss Becket, and do you not see how many creatures I must look after outside of class hours as well?" Silvanus asked all of these questions in a fairly calm manner, almost as if Lena was nothing more than just an irritant for him. "All these creatures that you and your classmates have difficulties with, I still have to watch them after class. They still need to be fed and walked and taken after. I still also have take care of creatures in the Forest that may need to be healed. As much as you want to see me as the bad guy, Miss Becket, I do have capabilities beyond merely cleaning up their waste. Did you know last week I had to heal a centaur's broken leg? No, I didn't think so. I still have to eat, sleep, bathe between there. So as much as you think I'm supposed to cater to your particular needs, there are more important things that I must attend to sometimes. You have no right to speak to me like that. Detention for a week. You are dismissed, and you'll get the mark from your essay back sometime soon when they are finished, and when I have decided who cheated. Goodnight."

400 X 200 [/img] if the clouds are just too high I F I T O S S A N D T U R N A N D F A L L B Y T H E W A Y S I D E , J U S T F O L L O W T H E S T A R S• || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • || • HIM being so calm was both annoying and, from lack of a better word, comforting almost. Most people wouldn’t handle being challenged well. She’d learned that on her own too many times already. So it was comforting that, as a professor, he could control himself and not hurt a student or say anything regretful. It was annoying though because of how he did it. As if he was better than her and she was just a pawn. Lena didn’t care for that at all but she kept most of her emotions in check though her eyes were turning a lighter brown the more she was in his presence. While he basically said that she was foolish for not coming to him for issues with classes and things, if she had him, she barely was able to hold in her urge to roll her eyes. “I wouldn’t. If I didn’t learn the lesson correctly from you the first time, repeating the same process again would probably not help.” That and she wouldn’t want to be around him that much. She disliked being around professors out of the classroom settings. Normally she wasn’t anything but polite but that night just seemed like her whole emotional center was thrown off and the Care of Magical Creatures professor was its target.
Lena watched his eyes narrow and knew that she shouldn’t have said anything but she was too angry to not. He was abusing his power knowing damn well that Sirius didn’t cheat and neither did she and yet he kept pushing and pushing the issue as well as basically calling her stupid. There was only so much a seventeen year old girl could take. He was honestly lucky she hadn’t all out cursed him like she wanted to. Then again, she would be totally expelled if that occurred. Unless she used Obliviate, but Lena really wasn’t that much of a bitch. She was passionate about things and her anger could rival even Sirius Black when she really got started, it just so rarely came out that it barely matted. But everything Silvanus Kettleburn said to her just made it grow and grow and push all of her wrong buttons. She tried to talk as he paused for a breath, her lips parting, automatically wanting to blast him into his place for assuming anything about her or thinking she was too stupid to not know those things. Being a busy professor was one thing, not doing their job was another. Professor Mcgonagall had just as much work to do as him and she got all of the assigned work back graded within days of receiving assignments. No matter what he said, he had no excuse and she was going to say as much before he barreled on and continued trying to make her feel small. It didn’t work and her back even straightened.
At being given a week’s worth of detention her eyes flashed dangerously but she knew better than to test it. She was already in enough trouble as it was. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of him getting her into even more. So, without saying another word even to his ‘goodnight’, though her gaze promising retribution, she turned away again and walked to the door to his office, flinging it open and then slamming it shut loudly. The noise wasn’t a big deal, hiding from Filtch was easy and she wasn’t heading back to the dorm right off anyway. Instead, her feet led her down to the kitchens to get something to drink to calm her nerves before she hurt someone who didn’t deserve it.
